Franciscan Oakville Estate Meritage 2002

Winemaker's Notes:

Just as in 2001, the quality-obsessed Alexandre Thienpont has not included any Cabernet Sauvignon at all in his wine in 2002. Instead it contains 40% Cabernet Franc and 60% Merlot. The quality of Thienpont's wines seems to get better and better each year, and 2002 continues this trend with another exceptional example. This is all purity and class, with lovely cherry aromas and deep strawberry and plum fruit with vanilla hints on the palate. What this cerebral wine lacks in brawn it more than makes up for in elegance. Outstanding. Drink 2010-2015.

Franciscan has its roots deeply embedded in the soil of Napa Valley. Founded over three decades ago, wine industry revolutionaries Raymond Duncan and Justin Meyer shaped the winery’s beginnings. In 1985, renowned vintner Agustin Huneeus took over the reins, leading the winery to greatness through innovation and a commitment to small-lot winemaking. Today, Director of Winemaking Janet Myers is preserving the winery’s legacy while leading it into the future. “We inherited a craftsman’s ethic here: work with nature, work in small lots, innovate. Our uniqueness depends on the details,” she says. All of Franciscan’s winemakers have left their individual marks, but all have remained true to Franciscan’s signature: bold wines with the rare combination of rich, vibrant flavors yet fine, supple texture. I loved this "port style" wine. I purchased on a recent trip to Napa and can't find anymore to buy!

Just had this with dinner Friday night at Carlo & Johnnys, with Jeff Ruby's Jewel...bone-in ribeye. It was excellent. Not overbearing, soft tannins. Had it again the next night at a friends, its a small world...once again excellent.

I've had multiple vintages of this, and the blending allows Franciscan to adjust for the yearly ups and downs of grape quality. Always pleases -- the perfect wine to pick up when visiting for a big holiday meal.

...A terrific effort, this classic blend ... exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as a complex bouquet of cedar, spice box, black cherries, and cassis. With impressive purity, medium body, moderate tannin, and a long finish (40 plus seconds)... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. A Bordeaux Blend wine from Bordeaux in France. 2002 Vieux Chateau Certan 750ml
