Franciscan Merlot Napa 2010
Sear a duck breast and it should set you up well for the black currant and black anise intensity of this wine. It's chunky, but not all black, with a shot of bing cherry, a frisky, foresty edge to rise out of the blanket of chocolaty tannins that falls softly over the end. Tightly wrapped and lasting, this isn't a challenging wine, it's just about pleasure.Add winemaker's notes
RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.
I thought it was great. Great nose, with almond and plum. and a nice complexity on the palate. Tasted more like a toasty cab to me, except that it had that almost effervescent quality that merlot sometimes has. certainly not boring.
Good but pricey

So filled with sweet cocoa, it's almost like liquid milk chocolate, poured over ripe black cherries and sprinkled with vanilla. Oak adds a toasty edge. This dry wine is as luscious as the California sun could make it.
Distinguished flavors of black currant, chocolate and plum and fine tannins. Oak adds smoke, spice and vanilla. There's a sweet, fat and lush texture that epitomizes Merlot's appeal.
A little angular and sugary sweet, but it's soft enough, with a creamy, velvety texture and some ripe blackberry jam and chocolate candy flavors.
An exuberantly fruity, smoky, oaky nose leads to a soft, straightforward, plump, chewy wine that is ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.
Black pepper, Turkish tobacco and sweet strawberry fruit all knit together in this tense, stylish Merlot. There's a strong oak influence, but it finishes clean. Decant it for chicken grilled wiuth Moorish spices.
Harvested and crafted with care in Napa Valley's Rutherford area, this is as good an argument for drinking Merlot as any we've encountered. Like a classic Bordeaux, this is perfectly ageworthy, but right now it's showing lovely ripe blackberry and cherry flavors, great balance, and a clean finish.
