Franciscan Merlot Napa 2006
Winemaker's Notes:
Wine Tasting Notes Rich ruby red intensity with crimson accents. Incredibly rich, with intense blackberry and black cherry, accented by vanilla-toasted oak with hints of cassis. Supple and ripe blackberry, black cherry and hints of toasted oak and vanilla fill the mouth with a full mid-palate and a long, round finish

Add your reviewThe wine has an inky black color at the center leading to some bright ruby along the edges. The nose presents aromas of blackberry, prune, leather and toasted oak that seem a bit old world. The taste is much less fruit forward than I was expecting, with a bit of cassis and black licorice up front that transition nicely to some notes of dark chocolate and mineral notes midpalate. The finish is smooth and velvety as the tannins are mature and subdued leading to a bit of that old world Bordeaux style funk on the smooth, exceptionally dry finish. Creamy mocha and oak flavors are immersed in this wine, almost overshadowing the ripe cherry and currant. Turns raw, with dry, oaky tannins on the finish. Those who like wood in their wines will find this pleasing. Drink now through 2007.

Spreads out plenty of ripe, tasty flavors, with a core of currant, blackberry and cherry and finishes with a nice touch ot toasty, cedar oak. Enough tannin to merit short-to-mid-term cellaring. Solid value. Drink now through 2008.

Medium-bodied, with pretty spice, currant, black cherry and leather notes. Mild tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2006.

A distinctive, supple Merlot characterized by fruit concentration and elegance. Deep, stone fruit aromas. Rich, lush and velvety. Fresh fruit flavors of cherries, plums and blackberries merge with light, toasty oak. Well balanced and structured, with a long finish.

An exuberantly fruity, smoky, oaky nose leads to a soft, straightforward, plump, chewy wine that is ideal for drinking over the next 5ndash;6 years.

Sear a duck breast and it should set you up well for the black currant and black anise intensity of this wine. Itrsquo;s chunky, but not all black, with a shot of bing cherry, a frisky, foresty edge to rise out of the blanket of chocolaty tannins that falls softly over the end. Tightly wrapped and lasting, this isnrsquo;t a challenging wine, itrsquo;s just about pleasure.
