Francis Ford Coppola Rosso & Bianco Pinot Grigio 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

Named for the gray color that the grapes turn at full ripeness, Pinot Grigio requires diligence so that the grapes are picked at the precise moment they reach full flavor, but before they turn dark in color. This light, crisp, versatile wine is sourced from two regions: The Pinnacles Bench in Monterey and Clarksburg just outside of Lodi. Pinnacles Bench fruit is influenced by cool coastal conditions, while our Clarksburg grapes develop more ripeness owing to fertile soils and a warmer climate. When blended together, we create a wine with full, ripe flavors and balanced acidity.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

This wine was just the ticket with our crawfish boil. It has nice crisp citrus tones.

On the palate, the wine shows delicious fruit flavors of grapefruit and peaches, along with floral and mineral notes and a balanced structure.
