Usually we like the Coppola Diamond Series wines. While not always great, they are usually high quality wines and a good effort for the varietal. So I was enthusiastic when I saw the Temperanillo (which we love generally speaking) on the shelf. What a disappointment. Aromas that were hard to pinpoint, but some described as feet and others as bad cheese. We let it breath a while and still no improvement. Granted, this could have been a bad bottle, but it didn't seem corked to us, just unpleasant.

Our 2007 Tempranillo offers dazzling aromas of ripe berries, black plums, and sweet cigar smoke as well as rich, ripe flavors of crushed raspberries, dark chocolate, and spices. With smooth tannins and an earthy edge.

Winemaker's Notes:

From its inception, the Diamond Collection was designed to showcase pure, authentic varietal expressions from the best vineyard sites across California. Our new Tempranillo, however, is a departure from this mission because the fruit was grown in the Navarra region of Spain, which is just north of Rioja. We are extremely fond of this varietal, but have been unable to find domestic vineyards that produce the quality of fruit we require. So, in order to bring you this amazing red, we had to look elsewhere. Tempranillo has long been considered Spain's noble varietal. It is an early ripening grape that creates a sturdy, robust wine with intriguing spice qualities. The Navarra region, where this wine was grown, has limestone soils that accentuate this grape's smoky mineral notes and luscious fruit flavors.
