Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

VINTAGE PROFILE: While the 2014 growing season both started and finished ahead of schedule, our 2015 season broke the record for being the earliest yet. Persistent dry conditions reduced yields, resulting in beautiful flavor concentration and elegant aromatics. Warm, consistent temperatures contributed to very high quality fruit. The grapes reached maturity and were ready for picking in August. WINEMAKER’S NOTES: After the grapes were pressed, we used open-top fermenters and punched down the cap several times a day for extraction. When fermentation was complete, the wine was placed in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. During the maturation process we rack the wine several times to gently remove sediment so that the wine exhibits vibrant color. Our 2015 Pinot Noir offers tremendous depth of character, including good weight and a velvety palate along with sturdy but supple tannins. This vintage is incredibly spice driven. A dazzling perfume of blackberries, wild strawberries, cardamom, anise, and toasted wood is followed by juicy flavors of plums, cherry pie, and vanilla bean. Barrel regimen: 6.5 months; 20% new French oak Alcohol: 13.9%

With his Director's Cut series of wines Francis Ford Coppola focuses on the elite sub-regions of Sonoma County. For Pinot Noir there's no better location than Russian River Valley. The Russian River Valley climate is defined by a regular intrusion of cooling fog from the Pacific Ocean a few miles to the west. Much like the tide, the fog ebbs and flows, arriving each evening, cooling the area down from its daytime temperatures by as much as 35 to 40 degrees. This natural air conditioning provides for an extended growing season where the Pinot Noir grapes mature slowly for optimal development and maintain a good level of natural acidity. Meanwhile, the Valley’s loam and alluvial soil compositions help create rich and fragrant Pinot Noir that offers pronounced floral notes and a distinct earthy character. Grapes were fermented in open-top fermenters where they punched the cap down several times a day for added extraction. When fermentation was complete, the wine was placed in French oak barrels for 6 months, 40% new, 60% 1–2 year old. This wine was a Platinum Medal winner with 94 points in the Critics Challenge Wine Competition. One Judge wrote "Coppola's Director's Cut Pinot Noir from the excellent 2014 vintage is yet another in the recent string of outstanding California pinots released to sell under the $30 price point. This one's spicy, with bright red fruits and a hint of cola and a soft, smooth palate." A real gem!!
