Francis Ford Coppola Chardonnay California Votre Santé 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

We start with fruit selections chosen for their aromatic properties and flavor intensity. Our Votre Santé Chardonnay is crafted using a split fermentation technique, where half of the fruit is fermented in oak and half is fermented in stainless steel. This method produces the perfect degree of richness and spice nuances from the wood so the wine has body and character, but also derives a good balance of ripe, expressive fruit. Since we believe wine is best enjoyed with a delicious meal and the company of good friends, we craft our Chardonnay in a food-friendly style that has a moderate level of natural acidity. Finally, a small percentage of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to create a luscious mouthfeel. All of these efforts produce a wine with succulent fruit, a light buttery texture and just a kiss of toasted oak.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

Crisp with peaches, apricots and pears. A touch of oak and a bit of vanilla. Tastes like a Chardonnay twice its price.

Tasting Notes:

Our 2009 Votre Santé Chardonnay offers an elegant balance of ripe, mouthwatering fruit, bright citrus notes and a creamy finish. The alluring scent of honeysuckle, pears, and cinnamon is followed by impressions of summer melons, yellow apples, tangerine, and vanilla ice cream.
