Francis Coppola Director's Cabernet 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

We chose to make a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon rather than blend in other varietals so that we could create a real terroir wine with pure varietal flavor. As a result, the Director's Cut Cabernet delivers enticing aromas of cola, cherry, and eucalyptus before revealing flavors of dark, rich berries, cassis and black cherries, which is typical of fruit grown in the renowned Alexander Valley.

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

Winemaker's NotesWith Merlot, the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot that exudes multiple layers of flavor and a nice seductive texture. We also blend in small amounts of Syrah and Petite Sirah to achieve a richer color. Grapes that come from Paso Robles provide sweet fruit flavors, spice notes and earthy, mineral nuances while the Sonoma fruit contributes natural acidity to create more balance and finesse. Monterey County grapes provide concentration; a result of the well-drained sandy loam soils that characterize the region. 2009 was an excellent vintage that featured only light spring rain, warm summer weather and no abrupt climate changes at season's end. These amazing conditions resulted in a richly textured Merlot that's abundantly flavorful and perfectly balanced by supple tannins and notes of spice and oak. ...

With his Director's Cut series of wines Francis Ford Coppola focuses on the elite sub-regions of Sonoma County so of course this Zinfandel is sourced entirely from Dry Creek Valley with it's many old vines vineyards and its picture-perefct growing conditions for Zin. This zesty 2009 scored 92 points in Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "Just one word for this Zin: delicious. It's really classic Dry Creek, maybe a little softer than many, but profoundly ripe in wild berry, cherry, cola, licorice, black pepper and sandalwood flavors that finish long and deep. Great price for a Zinfandel this good."

Immensely fragrant and brimming with dark, rich flavors of briary blackberries, plums and cherries, this wine is dense and highly fruity but with ample points of intrigue from notes of vanilla, espresso, nutmeg and alluring wood nuances.

Tasting Notes:

The 2009 Sofia Rosè displays a luminous magenta hue and beautiful perfume of wild strawberries, tea leaves, and violets. Luscious flavors of raspberries, cherries, candied orange, and cloves enliven the palate, making this year's vintage richly fruited yet graceful and lightly textured.

Notes: 20 months in French oak barrels
