Francis Coppola-Diamond Series Claret Black Label California 2015

Member Review by yoscott:

Enjoyed this bottle at Bonefish Grill with dinner. Way too pricey at the restaurant, but then again, what wine isn't?? Easy drinking, didn't have that big meaty chewy consistency you would look for from a Cabernet. Based on the price, it would be easy to use this as an every day red. I've since bought a bottle at Kroger and enjoyed it very much. Smokey nose with hints of cherry and chocolate. Very nice!

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

This was fruit forward with quite a bit of red cherry. Not dry or tannic, but the absence of that seemed a bit uncharacteristic for a cab. Seems like it could be all things to all people. Good price point.

Just opened the 2002 and found a robust, velvety, current and blackberry flavored vintage. A bit sweet on the palate, and generally yummy. Wonderful with a bit of rare beef!

Diamond Collection Claret typically includes some combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec to create a prestige Bordeaux-style blend, bottled with gold netting in the way Europe’s finest wines were once presented. Claret fruit is grown in a range of vineyards from diverse locations resulting in greater complexity. This vintage the majority of fruit came from Solano, El Dorado, and Lake counties, appellations that feature volcanic soils and higher elevations. WINEMAKER’S NOTES: We came off an early vintage in 2014 only to have an even earlier season in 2015. Limited rainfall in the spring reduced yields and contributed to fruit with very good concentration. Our 2015 Diamond Claret offers voluptuous body and supple tannins with loads of red and black fruits, toasted spices, and an intriguing floral nuance. TASTING PROFILE: Appearance: Garnet Aromas: Black currants, raspberries, violets, anise Flavors: Cherries, pomegranate, toasted oak, vanilla

WINEMAKER’S NOTES: We thought we’d hit the jackpot with the 2012 vintage only to have another incredible season in 2013. Having great weather two years in a row optimizes the vines and what makes the 2013 vintage even more spectacular than its predecessor. Both red and white varietals developed wonderful concentration and are intensely fragrant and well balanced. This year’s Claret offers layers of complexity with robust flavors, richness, and well-hewn tannins. Diamond Collection Claret typically includes some combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. We harvest grapes from our own estate as well as other Napa, Sonoma and El Dorado vineyards. This combination of climates results in great complexity and excellent balance. In fact, we joke that our Black Label Claret has a problem offering itself for far less than it deserves. Its a premium wine at a popular price and it has set the bar for the quality of the entire brand. The bottle is distinguished with gold netting in order to convey its prestigious status, a tribute to the way Europes finest wines were once presented.Winemakers Notes:2012 was an excellent vintage across California due to the steady, mild temperatures during the summer months. This consistency helped the grapes mature gradually and develop deeply concentrated fruit with complex aromatics, excellent body, and supple tannins. The 2011 growing season experienced chilly spring temperatures and heavy rains, which reduced our overall crop size. Waiting for that late, warm fall to arrive pushed harvest out weeks later than normal. But having less fruit and extra hangtime allowed the grapes to develop wonderfully concentrated flavors with alluring spice notes, body, texture and supple tannins.Tasting Profile:Appearance: Deep MagentaAromas: Cherries, blackberries, cloves and oakFlavors: Cassis, plums, raspberries and vanilla - WineryBlend:79% Cabernet Sauvignon15% Petit Verdot3% Merlot3% Cabernet FrancBarrel Regimen: 15 months in French oakAlcohol: 13.5%Total Acid: .57g/100mlpH: 3.55

This Bordeaux-styled Cabernet relies on a nice helping of Petit Verdot to enhance the dark color, and bring velvety, espresso-like flavors to the already generous black fruit flavors.

A long-time customer favorite, this Cab-based red is lush and soft, with rich spice and velvety fruit. Very easy to drink.

The 2010 growing season experienced chilly spring temperatures, and a mild summer. Waiting for that late, warm fall to arrive pushed harvest out weeks later than normal. But having the extra hangtime, allowed the fruit to develop beautifully concentrated flavors, and become a very layered, textural wine with dark, rich fruit impressions, supple tannins and distinct spice nuances that enhance the oak barrel character. - WineryTasting ProfileAppearance: Dark garnetAromas: Berries, plums, and allspiceFlavors: Cherries, currants, cassis, and vanillaAppellation: CaliforniaBlend:79% Cabernet Sauvignon13% Petit Verdot5% Merlot,3% Cabernet FrancAlcohol: 13.5%Total Acid: .62g/100mlpH: 3.68Barrel Regimen: 11 months in French oak
