Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

really enjoyed this wine. It was very soft and easy to drink. I didn't even want to share a sip with my wife.

Wine Tasting NotesOur Diamond Series Claret offers broad aromas of sandalwood, spice, and red currants followed by layers of engaging black currant, berry, and dark chocolate flavors. Hints of sweet vanilla framed by luxurious, elegant tannins highlight the wine's lengthy finish.

Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Black Label Claret, as its British-derived name implies, is a Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine created in the same style as classic Bordeaux. We use all five Bordeaux varietals in the blend, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot and harvest grapes from Napa and Sonoma as well as the warmer El Dorado region. The 2006 Claret is supple and rich with smooth tannins, ripe berry flavors and seductive aromas. Create a classic pairing by serving it with roasted lamb or a petite filet with Gorgonzola butter.Tasting ProfileAppearance Dark inky magentaAromas Plum, blackberry, mocha and crème bruléeFlavors Crushed wild berries, cassis, vanilla and exotic spicesCorey Beck, WinemakerAppellation CaliforniaBlend 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 7% Merlot, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet FrancAlcohol 13.8%Total Acid .56pH 3.73Barrel Regimen 12-14 months in French oakReleased January, 2008
