Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Black Label Claret 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

"Our prize offering, the ultra premium Claret, sports a label that honors the first Cabernet Sauvignon blended in a Bordeaux style by Gustave Niebaum in 1910. Claret is a term originally coined by the British to describe Cabernet-based wines. This Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc blend is alluring and sophisticated; it is memorably lush with a tapestry of smooth tannins and succulent flavors of wild berries, plum and anise. Borrowing tradition of European wineries, we add gold netting to bottle to signify outstanding quality of wine." -Winery

Francis Ford Coppola’s love for wine didn’t just sprout up overnight. His grandfather, Agostino Coppola, had a passion for wine back in the 1920s, when he used to make wine in the basement of his New York apartment. They weren’t sophisticated wines: they were just everyday wines that anyone could enjoy. Francis and Eleanor Coppola, Francis’ wife, attempted to continue this passion when they purchased their own vineyard in Rutherford, California in 1975 using the proceeds from The Godfather. This plot was a part of the historic Inglenook Winery, and it included the former home of Gustave Niebaum, member of the Culinary Institute of America’s Vintner’s Hall of Fame. After tireless effort by the whole family, the winery produced its first vintage in 1977 under the Niebaum-Coppola label. After many years of success, the family purchased Inglenook Winery in its entirety in 1995. In 2006, the winery was renamed to Rubicon Estate Winery in honor of the estate’s flagship wine. The Coppola family couldn’t stop there - in March 2006, they purchased the former Chateau Souverain winery in Geyserville, California, transforming it into the Francis Ford Coppola Winery. In their first four years, their family of wines exploded from 12 to 45 wines. Corey Beck was made the director of wine-making and the general manager of the winery, and he currently oversees seven wine brands. There are currently 9 lines of wine, each with a different personality and varietal composition. The Sofia line, for example, was created as a gift from Francis to his daughter, and it exudes charm, style, and romance. Read less

This was fruit forward with quite a bit of red cherry. Not dry or tannic, but the absence of that seemed a bit uncharacteristic for a cab. Seems like it could be all things to all people. Good price point.

A long-time customer favorite, this Cab-based red is lush and soft, with rich spice and velvety fruit. Very easy to drink.

The 2011 growing season experienced chilly spring temperatures and heavy rains, which reduced our overall crop size. Waiting for that late, warm fall to arrive pushed harvest out weeks later than normal. But having less fruit and extra hangtime allowed the grapes to develop wonderfully concentrated flavors with alluring spice notes, body, texture and supple tannins.Tasting Profile:Appearance: Deep MagentaAromas: Cherries, blackberries, cloves and oakFlavors: Cassis, plums, raspberries and vanilla - WineryBlend:79% Cabernet Sauvignon15% Petit Verdot3% Merlot3% Cabernet FrancBarrel Regimen: 15 months in French oakAlcohol: 13.5%Total Acid: .57g/100mlpH: 3.55

This Bordeaux-styled Cabernet relies on a nice helping of Petit Verdot to enhance the dark color, and bring velvety, espresso-like flavors to the already generous black fruit flavors.
