Francesco Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi 1982

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Apon pouring there was a note of sour maderization with very strong notes of porcini, light hints of soy and lilac. This really went through an evolution as the nose added tar, sand, light strawberry jam notes, then turned more autumnal adding damp cigar, cigarette smoke, boullion cube and coal to sweetening, candied raspberry fruit. Opens with real upfront bottle sweetness but not alot of fruit, instead alot of bleached bones and boiled pig skin, a hint of caramel, still some stiff tannins with a drying, clipped finish. With time this comes together nicely with integrated acidity, good medium deoth of savory fruit, solid tannins. Certainly austere with fading red fruits and spicy minerality dominating the palate. Lacks some finesse and depth. This seems to be a less than perfect bottle.

Francesco Rinaldi & Figli:
The company was founded in 1870, when our grandfather, Giovanni, left Diano d'Alba and walked to Barolo, where he had just inherited a vineyard and a house. As he was a fine wine-dresser, he was immediately conquered by the subtle charm of these hills. Some years later he was supported by the help of his sons and today the business is run by his descedants, who love this evocative little world jus like he did.
