What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Winemakers Notes

Tasting Notes: CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WINE: This vintage has an attractive deep dark ruby-red hue with crimson shades. Its flavours are the very characteristic merlot flavours, fruity and intense. Flavours are rounded and full, very bulky, with silky tannins. The overall effect is very harmonious which makes this a wine that can be drunk straight away, at 13°C or 14°C (55°F - 57°F), accompanied by grilled red meats, roasted game, and certain southern French specialities.

Percentage Grape: 100% Merlot

Soil: Terroir (unique local conditions): The vineyard extends read more...over undulating hilly terrain with thin limestone and combination clay-limestone type soils. The merlot grapes used for this wine come from a selection of plots of land where low-yield growing methods are used and exposure to sunlight of each vine's leaves is maximised. Grapes are only picked when fully ripe. Last year hot sunny weather enabled vine plants to reach full maturity and these two factors resulted in grapes being completely disease-free.

Vinification Method: WINE MAKING METHODS: Mechanical grape-pickers are used. The grape-harvest is then de-stemmed and cleaned in cellars before the wine is made using the long maceration method. The grape juice undergoes frequent pumping down and pumping over, this is done to allow the grapes' pigment and pulp to be fully released.    (hide)
