What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Reviews

Foxglove is the brainchild of brilliant winemaker Bob Varner, who is renowned for the Varner wines he crafts with his brother. This Chardonnay is sourced from Edna Valley, a small wine region located close to the Pacific Ocean. The Valley's cool, foggy summers and clay-loam soils produce a well-balanced, mineral-driven, beautifully complex wine.

Perhaps the greatest value in Chardonnay in the marketplace today, this wine, made by the highly talented Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains, comes from fruit accessed in California's Edna Valley. With malolactic blocked but with lees stirring, this 25,000-case cuvee provides terrific notes of tropical fruit and poached pear in a fleshy, medium-bodied style with obvious minerality and precision. This is a remarkable effort that is fresh, lively, and best drunk over the next 1-2 years.

Aromas were very inviting. Smooth to the taste, but I wasn't sure the oak was as inviting. Maybe b/c of the absence of malolactic fermentation.
