Foxen Pinot Noir Santa Maria Valley Julia's Vineyard 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

92 points Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate): Ripe black cherries, strawberries, forest floor and lots of spice emerge from the 2014 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard, which is medium-bodied, nicely textured, fresh and elegant. There's a kick of tannin, yet ripe and polished. Give bottles a year or two and drink through 2024. Drink: 2016-2024. (Aug 2016)

Since that time, their dedication has remained the same—the creation of very small-production, vineyard-designated wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800's. In 1837, this Santa Barbara County pioneer purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic, a Mexican Land Grant that originally totaled nearly 9000 acres and comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his ranch cattle brand, which has become a trademark of the winery. It is very fitting that FOXEN has made its home on the 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands. With the completion of FOXEN’s new solar-powered winery and tasting room in August 2009, the historic and beloved “tasting shack was renamed “foxen 7200”, where Bill and Dick now feature their Bordeaux and Cal-Ital-style wines, under a newly designed label. FOXEN pinots, chardonnays and Rhône-style wines will be showcased in the new tasting room at 7600 Foxen Canyon Road. Read less

Foxen is an impressive, quaint winery tucked away in the hills of Santa Barbara and boasts some great, tasteful wines. Their 2006 Pinot is, as the wine maker notes, very fruit forward with earthy flavors. Overall a well-balanced and memorable wine well worth a taste.

Claimed to have notes of cinnamon, cola nut and cardamom, we decanted this one to take advantage of anything it had to offer. This wine maintains an earthiness throughout, but definitely delivers the cola, hint of cinnamon and cardamom mid-palate. This is a great Pinot. The only reason it didn't receive a 90 or 91 was because we compare all Pinots to the 2003 Mueller Emily's Cuvee Pinot, or the William Selyem...which are phenomenal. Will definitely buy this one again. SDWC.

The 2010 Pinot Noir Julia's Vineyard is an attractive, mid-weight Pinot bursting with energy and sheer class. Dark red cherries, mint and spices are some of the notes that emerge as the Julia's shows off its pedigree and pure class. There is good jui... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Tight, firm and tannic, with rich loamy earth notes and mineral, dried berry and sage flavors. The blueberry and wild berry fruit underneath should shine with a little time.
