Foxen Chardonnay Santa Maria Valley Bien Nacido Block Uu 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

94 points and 'Editors' Choice,' Wine Enthusiast: [$35 list] Intriguing lemongrass, Asian pear, chamomile, jasmine and pink grapefruit aromas arise on the nose of this dynamic single-block bottling. Tons of energy show on the sip, which is light and yet offers lots of intriguing flavors, from white sesame and chalk to lime peels and grippy yellow grapefruit pithiness. Alcohol 13.4%. (Feb 2017)

Since that time, their dedication has remained the same—the creation of very small-production, vineyard-designated wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. The winery is named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800's. In 1837, this Santa Barbara County pioneer purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic, a Mexican Land Grant that originally totaled nearly 9000 acres and comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his ranch cattle brand, which has become a trademark of the winery. It is very fitting that FOXEN has made its home on the 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands. With the completion of FOXEN’s new solar-powered winery and tasting room in August 2009, the historic and beloved “tasting shack was renamed “foxen 7200”, where Bill and Dick now feature their Bordeaux and Cal-Ital-style wines, under a newly designed label. FOXEN pinots, chardonnays and Rhône-style wines will be showcased in the new tasting room at 7600 Foxen Canyon Road. Read less

Wow. I hope I am not given to hyperbole, but this is seriously one of the most delicious California Chardonnays I have ever tasted. Brilliant on the palate, somewhat flinty, tingly. Perfectly dry, perfectly balanced, an nearly perfect wine!

A very exceptional and rare Chardonnay from California's Central Coast. The San Francisco Chronicle described it as "Ripe pear, tropical fruit and mandarin orange aromas and flavors; moderately rich, with a lovely lift and just enough sweet, creamy oak. A slight mineral edge on the lengthy crisp finish makes this a versatile food wine." And Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 96 points saying "You want decadence, opulence and fabulosity in your Chardonnay? This one’s for you. It’s tremendous in ripe pineapple, pear, peach, mango, lime, tangerine and papaya flavors. So much fruit, while the oak application is never heavy handed, applying just the right touch of buttered toast. Where does all that vanilla honey come from? A magnificent example of a first-growth California Chardonnay, at a great price." Extremely Limited!

Vivid yellow. Vibrant aromas of melon, honey, fig, nectarine and oak spice. At once juicy and dense, with lively honeydew, lemon curd ginger flavors. Finishes dry and firm, with very good energy and spicy persistence.
