Fox Run Vineyards Riesling 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very floral, chalky earth and sweet smelling, this really has a mineral edge and a golden, weirdly waxy tone to the nose with a note of chenin dried floral/pollen, meaty and a bit cat pee, grassy, not entirely attractive,. Fairly sweet entry then rather steely and lean along the midpalate with a perfumed, almost cherry fruit tone that compliment the apricot tones, lean and austere that bit of cat pee that becomes more assertive on the finish, very interesting stuff but a bit challenging as well 87pts

Situated on the slopes overlooking one of the deepest parts of Seneca Lake is Fox Run -- a winery with fifty acres of vineyards producing a remarkable range of fine wines. Under the dynamic, forward-looking leadership of Scott Osborn, Fox Run has become one of the truly great producers in the Finger Lakes region just south of Rochester, New York. Native grape varieties put the Finger Lakes on the map a century and half ago, and French-American hybrids, bred for cold resistance, still have an important niche in the region. But Osborn was convinced that non-hybrid European Vinifera grapes could yield wine excellent enough to put the Finger Lakes in the ranks of the world’s top fine wine producers. For more than a century Fox Run was a dairy farm. The first grapes were not planted until 1985, and the barn, erected shortly after the Civil War, was restored and converted to a winery and tasting room with a spectacular view of the lake in 1989. Very light herbaceous nose leads to sweet apple flavors mixed with bright acidity ending with grassy and herbaceous notes.

Faint nose of fresh baked bread I find in so many NYS Rieslings with a little spic eon nose. Taste of green apple, with strong salty, spicy flavor, very flinty (mineral) with a little lime and grapefruit. Good acids cover the residual sugar, so this wine seems almost dry. This would work with a light seafood dish, or a light cheese. Just a little light to merit a 90 score. (2 views)

Has a plump feel, with friendly white ginger and yellow apple flavors, backed by a whiff of pie crust on the open finish. Tasty, if a touch soft overall. Drink now. 3,350 cases made.

Lifted and mildly phenolic, this off-dry white has generous apple and quince flavors that last with quiet persistence. For shrimp flash-fried with lemon and chile flakes.

Apricot, jasmine, and tropical fruit aromas abound in this soft and rich semi-dry Riesling. In the mouth, peach and honey flavors are enlivened by the burst of fresh lime. Let us show you why Rieslings from the Finger Lakes are among the most highly acclaimed in the world.

This offers a friendly mix of pippin apple, melon and green plum flavors, with a solid, juicy finish. Drink now.

A pretty, apple and peach-infused white, supported by a vibrant structure. Shows some depth, too, picking up a vanilla note midpalate through the finish. Drink now through 2002.

Light and dry in style, with peach, lime and floral notes. Fresh, flinty finish. Nice cut here. Drink now.

A touch of sweetness perks up the apricot and nectarine flavors, while moderate acidity balances the whole package. Drink now.
