Fox Run 2004

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

Like a Mâcon, this is a lean, nervy Chardonnay with lemon and mineral flavors accented by butter on the finish. Its crisp texture is appetizing.

Situated on the slopes overlooking one of the deepest parts of Seneca Lake is Fox Run -- a winery with fifty acres of vineyards producing a remarkable range of fine wines. Under the dynamic, forward-looking leadership of Scott Osborn, Fox Run has become one of the truly great producers in the Finger Lakes region just south of Rochester, New York. Native grape varieties put the Finger Lakes on the map a century and half ago, and French-American hybrids, bred for cold resistance, still have an important niche in the region. But Osborn was convinced that non-hybrid European Vinifera grapes could yield wine excellent enough to put the Finger Lakes in the ranks of the world’s top fine wine producers. For more than a century Fox Run was a dairy farm. The first grapes were not planted until 1985, and the barn, erected shortly after the Civil War, was restored and converted to a winery and tasting room with a spectacular view of the lake in 1989. This lighter-styled, fruity Chardonnay hails from the Western shore of Seneca Lake, one of the deepest freshwater lakes in the world. A well balanced wine with mild acidic flavors of grapefruit and green apple emerges on the pallet that evolves slowly into Bartlett pear on the long finish. This is a wonderful complement to grilled chicken with a side of fresh fruit salad.

Delicate pear aromas marked with a minerally streak of graphite. Asian pear and lemon flavors are light, but flavorful, and finish juicy and crisp. Clean and bright, worth trying with shellfish.

A pleasant, mild-bodied wine that shows pretty citrus, melon and apple notes at its core. A fresh, lemony edge on the finish is clean and bright.

A classic example of this varietal, this wine offers aromas of pears, apple and spice, and has a long, soft finish.

Luscious fruit and toast aromas are the beginning of this fun wine from Fox Run. On the palate, it offers good Chardonnay flavors and a round, supple mouthfeel. It's not terribly complex but is flavorful and has dimension.
