What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

2006 "The Biker" Zinfandel, Paso Robles
The Dusi and Preston Zin vineyards, with their rocky, calcareous soils, grow low yield vines, producing fruit of intense concentration. A splash of Mourvedre lends an extra kick in the mid-palate. The Biker has blackberry, anise spice and vanilla on the nose. Rich, black fruit and spice, lingering to a silky vanilla oak finish. Biker rocks!

Editorial Reviews

Quinine and treebark emerge first from the glass giving this a curiously earthy and biter edge though the rich mulberry and plum tones slowly gain the upper hand though a bitter edge remains recalling a bit or burnt brownie. Certainly smells powerful and complex. This is pretty big in the mouth with a lot of power, furry tannins, and yet it retains freshening acidity. There are masses of dark, slightly confected fruit with touches of molasses, mocha and spice helping to frame the fruit and give the wine a bit of form. The finish is hot, rich and of decent length but this is really mostly about the power. 90pts

Reviews

This is a sleek and tasty Zinfandel that is almost sweet with dark fruit. It is an excellent example of a youthful but ripe Zin, without any old vine flavors or raisiny notes. Not large, jammy or overblown, it is refreshing and clean, nicely balanced, medium-bodied, with a silky finish (as noted above) and a hint of oak. It does improve from being allowed to breathe a bit. There is more than a liquid involved: I am not sure how to describe those wines that carry the flavors of the aromas into one's mouth, where they seem to open up and add an entirely new dimension. This is definitely a wine that does read more...
