What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

2006 "The Maverick" Zinfandel, Amador County
The 100-plus-year old vines of the original Grandpere Vineyard, along with the 40- year old vines of The Deaver and Linstead Vineyards produce a wine that is chewy and spicy, rich with blackberry fruit and a hint of velvet vanilla oak. Blended with a touch of Syrah from the Bailey Vineyard. Maverick…The Jam Bomb...mischievous fun!

Editorial Reviews

Spicy and earthy with lots of licorice at first then more French oak tones and plenty of sweet blackberry notes with hints of feral, wet dog, shale, and ocean breeze. Brambly and gingerbread notes add complexity. Big yet very smooth with a really nice refined mouthfeel. Great balance for this weight with apple skin notes right up front followed by deep, dark spiced berry fruits. A bit weighty and murky but intense and chewy and in this style very well done. This is powerfully flavored with dark tobacco, nutty, Toblerone chocolate and dried cherry notes with some streaks of espresso candy and earth read more...

strong nose of dark fruits, spices (pepper). A little picante.
Taste: initially powerful spice and peppery. Mid-palate is a bit more fruity. finish is unimpressive and a little bitter.

Four Vines have such a great wealth of Zinfandel that they have the ability to put together a fantastic multi-appellation Zinfandel Blend. The 2003 'OVC' was selected from vineyards in Mendocino, Amador, Sonoma, Paso Robles and Lodi. Included is a little of the old vine fruit from the various old vine vineyards to give that old vine concentration, structure and character. On the nose the wine has layers of berry fruit and anise aromas with hints of spice; on the palate, blackberry and spicy plum fruit result in a rich mouth-feel. The wine finishes big and opulent on the mid-palate with read more...

Big on the berry, nice on the oak. Better than the other "old vine" zins found at yer grocery.Like the label says: "Enjoy with candelight and a friend." Well at least I had a candle...

This Old Vines Zinfandel has a relatively dry approach, not jammy but still quite engaging. With a nice balance to the weight of the tannins and the presents of the fruit, it is by no means a fruit Zinfandel but it has a good mouthfeel and a great price for quality ratio!

I like the fruitiness of old vine zins. This one is not bad. It reminds me of Bogel.
