Wine Tasting NotesPleasantly devious mischief abounds from these dry-farmed, head pruned, old vine vineyards in the Shenendoah Valley. This Sierra Foothill valley is renowned for its old vine Zin vineyards, where fiery red volcanic soils produce fruit with intense, earthy character. The100-plus-year old vines of the original Grandpere Vineyard, along with the 40-year old vines of The Deaver and Linstead Vineyards produce a wine that is chewy and spicy, rich with blackberry fruit and a hint of velvet vanilla oak. STAFF SELECTION! - This Old Vines Zinfandel has a relatively dry approach as opposed to jammy and it is quite engaging. With a nice balance to the weight of the tannins and the presence of the fruit, it is by no means a fruity rather it is well balanced and the wood is well integrated. Nice, smooth mouthfeel and lingers well with a great price for quality ratio! - We have such a great wealth of Zinfandel that we have the ability to put together a fantastic multi-appellation Zin Blend. On the nose the wine has layers of berry fruit and anise aromas with hints of spice. 2006 Four Vines Zinfandel California (Horace says Lodi) - Nose: dark fruit, oaky, smokey (but not to the level of Plungerhead…definitely not as potent (much to Hector’s disappointment)), Palatte: sweet, quite sweet, fruity, like a ripe plum, can taste the oak, heavy and full, Finish: light to medium tannins, medium length
Lamarr: B 86.1 (nice, but a little too sweet for me, almost like a dessert wine, perhaps a good starter wine for some because it goes down easy, but I’d like to see a little more spice, a little more pepper, don’t think it quite holds up with food, more of an after dinner read more...dessert)
Hector: B+ 89 (too fruity to be an A)
