First there was ONE. Winemaker CHRISTIAN TIETJE is a hedonist. He is passionate about wine: making it, drinking it and bringing people together to enjoy it. Chris learned to love balanced, food-driven wines as an aspiring young chef in Boston. In 1990 he moved to San Francisco, determined to pursue his passion and become a winemaker. He fell head over heels for old vine Zinfandel, and began planning for bigger things. Then there were TWO. In 1994, Christian partnered with SUSAN A. MAHLER, a brainy and beautiful scientist and pilot, whom he nicknamed “SAM.” Armed with a degree in Earth Science, SAM took an immediate interest in vineyards. Together they created Four Vines Winery featuring eclectic, appellation-specific Zins, and one kick-ass no-oak “Naked” Chardonnay. They named their Zins Biker, Sophisticate and Maverick. Rich, succulent, fruit-generous wines that pair incredibly well with food. They relocated to Paso Robles where they began experimenting with Rhone varietals; bigger, headier wines that are positively explosive in flavor and form, as in the rogue Rhone blend “Anarchy.” Now there are THREE. Christian and SAM worked harder than ever to grow their winery to 14,000 cases, but they needed someone to help share the load. They connected with an old friend from Christian’s childhood, BILL GRANT, a successful entrepreneur and financier. Bill joined Four Vines as an advisor and financier in 2002 and joined the partnership in 2004, growing to approximately 40,000 cases and introducing new wines named Heretic and Phoenix. Bill travels across the country, turning on new audiences to the Four Vines Incident. Makers of fleshy, seductive wines for aficionados and hedonists alike, Four Vines brings a refreshing, playfully irreverent attitude to the industry. Read less

Spicy and earthy with lots of licorice at first then more French oak tones and plenty of sweet blackberry notes with hints of feral, wet dog, shale, and ocean breeze. Brambly and gingerbread notes add complexity. Big yet very smooth with a really nice refined mouthfeel. Great balance for this weight with apple skin notes right up front followed by deep, dark spiced berry fruits. A bit weighty and murky but intense and chewy and in this style very well done. This is powerfully flavored with dark tobacco, nutty, Toblerone chocolate and dried cherry notes with some streaks of espresso candy and earth leading to a moderately long, intense finish with notes of fudge and herbs. 90pts

Classic Zin on the nose. Bright fruit on the palate as the Barbera really shines through.Soft fruit and tannic finish.

88 points. The aroma of this wine is full of oak driven tones. It’s foresty and full of caramel, lightly burnt crème brûlée, vanilla ice cream, and just a faint peppery, grilled tone on the spin. Sweet and luscious, this wine’s smoothness and balance are the first things that I notice about it. Blackberry and raspberry pie filling, cheese Danish, and a mixture of pastries and baked goods seem to dominate the palate and last into the finish. This is a pleasant wine, and a very enjoyable experience, it’s refined and fun at the same time, and easily worth trying. strong nose of dark fruits, spices (pepper). A little picante. Taste: initially powerful spice and peppery. Mid-palate is a bit more fruity. finish is unimpressive and a little bitter.

A big splash of Barbera, together with a little Petite Sirah and Mourvedre keep this wine rocking on your palate from its jammy start to its velvety berry/cinnamon finish. This Zinfandel lives on the edge of conventionality and crazy: Part brambly berry. Part blackstrap molasses. All in Maverick's one-of-a-kind balanced and weighty style.

Chewy and spicy, rich with blackberry fruit and a hint of velvet vanilla oak. Blended with a touch of Syrah from the Bailey Vineyard. Maverick...The Jam Bomb...mischievous fun!

A powerful Zinfandel with laserlike focus, this has wild berry and spice aromas and ripe, intense blackberry, fresh earth and bay leaf notes that finish with tightly wound tannins. Drink now through 2012.
