Four Vines Chardonnay Naked Santa Barbera 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Quite intensely aromatic with notes of flowers, lees, nectarine and quince all coming together nicely. A bit soft on entry, this does pick up a bit of tension from some minerality on the mid-palate. This is a rather big wine and even though the acid can be sensed, it’s not sufficient to lend this enough brightness. It does snap on the finish along with some salty, quartzy minerality that lingers for quite some time. This has a lot going for it and just misses a touch on texture, but that finish is really intriguing. 88pts

First there was ONE. Winemaker CHRISTIAN TIETJE is a hedonist. He is passionate about wine: making it, drinking it and bringing people together to enjoy it. Chris learned to love balanced, food-driven wines as an aspiring young chef in Boston. In 1990 he moved to San Francisco, determined to pursue his passion and become a winemaker. He fell head over heels for old vine Zinfandel, and began planning for bigger things. Then there were TWO. In 1994, Christian partnered with SUSAN A. MAHLER, a brainy and beautiful scientist and pilot, whom he nicknamed “SAM.” Armed with a degree in Earth Science, SAM took an immediate interest in vineyards. Together they created Four Vines Winery featuring eclectic, appellation-specific Zins, and one kick-ass no-oak “Naked” Chardonnay. They named their Zins Biker, Sophisticate and Maverick. Rich, succulent, fruit-generous wines that pair incredibly well with food. They relocated to Paso Robles where they began experimenting with Rhone varietals; bigger, headier wines that are positively explosive in flavor and form, as in the rogue Rhone blend “Anarchy.” Now there are THREE. Christian and SAM worked harder than ever to grow their winery to 14,000 cases, but they needed someone to help share the load. They connected with an old friend from Christian’s childhood, BILL GRANT, a successful entrepreneur and financier. Bill joined Four Vines as an advisor and financier in 2002 and joined the partnership in 2004, growing to approximately 40,000 cases and introducing new wines named Heretic and Phoenix. Bill travels across the country, turning on new audiences to the Four Vines Incident. Makers of fleshy, seductive wines for aficionados and hedonists alike, Four Vines brings a refreshing, playfully irreverent attitude to the industry. Read less

As memojo noted, this kind of wine isn't for those who want to taste a buttered tree in their chards. But if you like something crisp and drinkable, at a good value, this is a good reach.

I enjoy this wine, particularly at its normal price point of about $11. I am not usualyl a fan of California Chardonnay due to the "butter bombs" that some wineries tend to produce, so I enjoy these "sheer" styles that really let the more crisp attributes of the grape come out and really let the juicy, fruity flavors shine. That said, if you prefer even a little noticeable oak in your Chardonnay (even if you don't like very heavily oaked chards) this may not do it for you.

Love it! Crisp, clean, refreshing! Very food friendly! This wine is like a breath of fresh air after being stuck in a NYC subway at 5pm on Friday in 100 degree weather.

Step away from the barrel! This Chardonnay was fermented in 100% stainless steel and has not seen any oak, nor does it want to. This is crisp, concentrated Chardonnay with all its natural acid. Naked exhibits apple, white peach, and pear, finishing long with hints of citrus and mineral. Eat oysters and drink "Naked" often!! - Winery

The nose is bright with white peach, minerality, creamy meringue, citrus and vanilla wafers. On the palate, crisp and refreshing with hint of lime sorbet and mineral followed by a long soft finish.

Intense and vibrant, with rich mineral, quince, citrus and ripe grapefruit flavors. Refreshing and cleansing, with a beam of tasty flavors unobstructed by oak. Drink now through 2009.

Fresh and floral, crisp and refreshing, with a mix of tropical fruit, apple and melon, enlivened by snappy acidity. Drink now.

With no oak, the pure, brilliantly ripe Chardonnay fruit shines through in this rewarding wine. Itrsquo;s so rich in tropical fruit, peach, pear and citrus flavors, you wonrsquo;t even miss the barrel influence. Best of all is the cool-climate crispness that makes the finish so clean and vibrant.
