Black fruit, spice and earth on the nose, with some violet undertones and a sweet candied red plum note. Big and a bit inky on entry with nice blue and black fruits up front over some toasty oak. Tannins are a bit spicy and stiff from the oak. Nice balance, neither overly dense nor thick, but a little youthfully chewy. Lots of blueberry fruit on the backend with a short, drying, woody finish. The finish shows a touch of heat as well but this is solid Petite. 87pts

Highly alcoholic big whopper of a wine. 15.2% alcohol is no joke. This knocked me on my ass. Thick, tannic and pairs well with any sort of heavy meat, like Beef Burgundy.

Full nose, lots of blackberries and cherries. The finish is funky (bitter and chalky) but still a nice peppery wine.

This medium-bodied wine is balanced and pleasant, but stays simple and grows somewhat thin with air. The nose opens earthy, as herbal, floral and woody scents intermingle with spicy notes and dark fruit. The palate launches with flavors of blueberry and black cherry and a strong, peppery grip on the top. The spicy mouthfeel sustains through 2 hours before turning fruitier and less complex. Blueberry dominates in the middle, herbs on the back. Pepper continues strong on the top during the medium finish. This same configuration repeats over four hours with an increasingly dry mouthfeel and widening grip, even with a diminished center. The zing on the top helps the wine stay alive even as the complexity fades and the center loses its fullness. An excellent value.

Floral and slightly hot nose. Slightly alcoholic and flavorful with a heavy finish.

Winemaker's Notes:

While many winemakers treat Petite Sirah like Cabernet, Winemaker Natalie West prefers gentle handling of her Estate Petite Sirah and goes so far as to treat it like her Pinot Noir. Once in the cellar, the Petite Sirah experiences a gentle press and is fermented in open top fermenters with punch downs three times a day. To help control tannins Natalie only uses 30 percent new oak. While most of the oak is French, she does like a touch of American oak to add a little sweetness to the finish. After the aging process the barrels are blended before bottling.

Tasting Notes:

On the nose blueberries and dark chocolate are the predominant aromatics with a touch of floral and spice. Flavors of blueberry, blackberry and black cherry commingle with hints of graham cracker and vanilla and a touch of white pepper. The well structured tannins produce a long silky finish with fruit to the end.
