Vineyards: Located just south of the town of Healdsburg, Foppiano Vineyards sits on 160 acres in the acclaimed appellation of the Russian River Valley. Cool morning fog and warm summer days create an ideal microclimate for grape growing. The Foppiano family has been producing world class fruit on this land since its purchase in 1896. Today the vineyard is planted to Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc on the warmer bench lands, and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the cooler land close to the Russian River. Winemaking: Surprisingly, Petite Sirah and Pinot Noir are more similar then one might expect. They both have elusive flavors that, once captured, make it clear why the varietals are so sought after. We achieved an optimum balance of fruit and tannin by utilizing hand punch downs and light pump overs. During fermentation, the wine’s flavors and textures are constantly changing. We produced the best Petite Sirah by draining and pressing the wine when fruit complexity is at its peak and tannin extraction is most balanced. Tasting Notes: Our 2013 Petite Sirah is a balanced and complex example of the varietal. A touch of dried rose petals, white pepper, ripe fruit and licorice aromas followed by a very satisfying mid-palate with midseason plum, black tea, baked cherry and huckleberry. The wine finishes with fruit and spice with supple tannins. BARRELS: 23% New French, 5% Hungarian, 5% American 20 MONTHS BARREL AGED ALCOHOL: 14.9% PH: 3.69 TA: 5.7 g/L RS: 0.96 g/L

Cool morning fog and warm summer days create an ideal microclimate for grape growing. The Foppiano family has been producing world class fruit on this land since its purchase in 1896. Today the vineyard is planted to Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, and Sauvignon Blanc on the warmer bench lands, and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the cooler land close to the Russian River. Winemaking: While many winemakers treat Petite Sirah like a Cabernet, our winemaker prefers gentle handling of the Estate Petite Sirah and even treats it like a Pinot Noir. Once in the cellar, the grapes are fermented in open top fermenters with punch downs three times per day, followed by gentle pressing. To help control tannins, we use 30 percent new oak. While most of the oak is French, we use a touch of Hungarian oak to add a little sweetness to the finish. After the aging process, the barrels are blended before bottling. Tasting Notes: Our 2012 Petite Sirah is truly a treat for the senses. Deep, dark, inky red in color it has rich aromas of blueberry and dark chocolate with subtle earth hints. The lush mouth feel is the perfect start with brambly berry flavors that slowly give way to blueberry, dark chocolate, blackberry with a delightfully long finish.
