Totally black/purple in color showing wild flowers, lush violets and a mild lactic nuance on the nose. As much as I liked the 1985 this was another breed altogether. It has a more classic Fonseca structure and poise, given its decade in the bottle. Dense, chewy blackberry flavors that tail off to the plum spectrum and provide waves of juicy, ripe fruit that is filled with glycerin. This Fonseca 1994 is a tannic monster which is atypical of how this has shown in the past when I've found it more approachable. It finished with gobs of mouth filling viscous Porty flavors - and brought a smile to my face. TOP HONORS of the tasting; with twenty+ more years before it will truly offer up its best showing!
Although I have had this VP only a handful of times in the past, it was the first bottle I’ve ever opened from my own cellar. Decanted for 7 hours, and consumed over the following three. Very dark ruby in color. Scents of dark cherry, cedar and anise load the glass. Closer to medium-bodied than a heavy weight with a smooth mouthfeel that is not silky. The palate offers semi-sweet, approachable blackcurrant and plum flavors with some licorice and chocolate intertwined on the slightly spirituous but otherwise lengthy finish. Although the structure is solid the tannins are round and are only perceptible on the finish. Not the blockbuster I was expecting. This still needs five years at a minimum to have the alcohol integrate more and will really start to drink well when it hits 25 years of age, with plenty of longevity from there. Approximately $100 at retail today.

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age. The 1977 has developed magnificently in the bottle, and while it clearly needs another decade to reach its summit, it is the best Fonseca since the 1970 and 1963.
Its a shame that I only had the opportunity to taste this legendary vintage too early - in the early 1980's. Even then it was clearly a stellar port: rich, fruity, powerful - a vintage to lay down for decades...even the next generation.
This was the grand finale on the fabulous first evening at The Woodlands at Nemacolin Resort in PA. We did not do it justice as this needs LOTS of decanting time and this was my fault, as it did not get decanted ahead and I should have mentioned that prior to our departure from Pittsburgh. Anyway, it did get nearly five hours of decanting ... but that is not enough for a youngster of this caliber, which easily handles 7-9 hours of time in decanter. It is so big and youthful, with potent tannins that come to the fore. Given the short duration of time, I was able to ignore the spirit that was present. Medium to dark ruby, this fine Fonseca showed it's muscle and grip and displayed distinct, ripe raspberry tang. The finish excelled in its length and persistence. Score: 94, which is way below the norm and this only had to do with the decanting time of this particular bottle.

The Fonseca 2011 is typically more forthcoming on the nose compared to the bashful Croft: a strident bouquet with lifted scents of freshly picked blackberries kirsch crushed stone and a dash of Hoi Sin and oyster sauce. It is very well-defined very focused and direct. The palate is silky smooth with not a rough edge in sight though not a typically voluptuous Fonseca because of the keen thread of acidity and the structure that lends this mighty Port wonderful backbone. A slight viscosity on the finish lacquers the tongue and indicates a core of sweet fruit is ticking away underneath that will surely explode several years after bottling. A tincture of salted licorice on the aftertaste is very attractive. This will turn out to become an outstanding Fonseca the growing season taming its exuberance with spectacular results. Itrsquo;s difficult to choose just one of the rsquo;94 Ports as my favorite, but I always have had a slight preference for the big, muscular style of Fonseca. This is the best Fonseca since the stunning 1977, which I already rated 100 points. Is it possible to rate a wine 101?
One of the most spectacular 1994s, this opaque purple-colored wine is an exotic, flamboyant, ostentatious port. Extremely fragrant and pungent, with a flashy display of jammy cassis, pepper, licorice, and truffles, this port is an attention-grabber. Awesomely rich, and full-bodied, with superb length, richness, and overall balance, it possesses a hugh mid-palate, layers of flavor, an unctuous texture, and a blockbuster finish. Everything is in place, with the brandy and tannin well-integrated, even concealed by the masses of fruit and glycerin. This wine will drink fabulously well at age ten, but keep for up to thirty years. Anticipated maturity: 2002ndash;2035.
Sporting an opaque, black-colored robe with dark purple trim, the 2003 Fonseca Vintage Port exhibits a nose of profound depth. Its sweet black mass of dark fruit and spice aromas leads to a character of immense depth, richness, and weight. Full-bodied, viscous, and almost impenetrable, this dense, backward port is powerful and exceptionally long in the finish. Possibly the most masculine Fonseca Irsquo;ve ever encountered, it coats the tasterrsquo;s palate with licorice, jammy black fruits, and notes of chocolate that last for over a minute. This blockbuster will require at least three decades to fully blossom. Anticipated maturity: 2035ndash;2060.
Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and itrsquo;s probably even better than that classic vintage mdash; more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violets and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, itrsquo;s a long-term, great Port. Best after 2012.
Magnificent Fonseca, this vintage is perfectly in tune with the density of fruit Bruce Guimaraens manages to pack into a bottle. That harmony of vintage and house style raises Fonseca to the top levels of rsquo;94. Tasters often imagine wines to have a physical shape, an impression of flavor intensity and depth over time, from the initial attack to the finish. Irsquo;ve often been fascinated by the shapes Taylor and Fonseca wines have taken on in my own taste memory. Both are made under the direction of Bruce Guimaraens, but the core fruit sources of each wine, and their subsequence styles are completely different. Fonseca, blended from grapes in the central Cima Corgo region of the Douro, reminds me of a curvaceous pear, round and ever more succulent as it ripens towards maturity. Fonsecarsquo;s rsquo;94 has that beautiful shape, on a monumental scale. The power of its fruit and tannin is not blunt, but makes itself apparent in the way the wine maintains its perfect balance and form at such a scale.
Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scale, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonsecarsquo;s standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006ndash;2025.
