Dense ruby/purple-colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage.

In both 1992 and 1994, Fonseca was the top wine of the vintage, and now again in 1997 it is the finest wine both out of barrel and in bottle. A seamless wine that shows complex aromas of plum and spices, the structure to age effortlessly, and a lovely long finish.

It's difficult to choose just one of the '94 Ports as my favorite, but I always have had a slight preference for the big, muscular style of Fonseca. This is the best Fonseca since the stunning 1977, which I already rated 100 points. Is it possible to rate a wine 101?

A young Port, with good, dark color and mineral and raspberry character. Medium- to full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and a firm, silky finish. This is outstanding, but I expected a little more from Fronseca; not as impressive as when tasted from barrel. Best after 2006.

Saturated blackish purple. Full=bodied. Highly extracted. Moderately tannic. Violets, blackberry, chocolate. Flora; accents on the nose lead a heavyweight palate with a solid mouthful of tightly wound fruit flavors showing great generosity up front. Finish is dominated by imposing tannins. A long-term keeper.

Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense, and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one of the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large-scale, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's standards). Anticipated maturity: 2006-2025.

Winemaker's Notes:

Fonseca vintage ports are marked by a style of great fruit richness, voluptuousness and firm tannic backbone. Their initial flavors of opulently concentrated black fruit and jammy spice evolve to reveal complex, silky impressions of dried currants, rose petal and dark chocolate with ending in a long, seductive finish.
