Follies Touriga Nacional 2012

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Thirty four hectares in a single block aged in barrique, 25% of which are new. Very smoky on the nose, almost roasting meats over a bed of tarry, dark fruits, showing a little raisin and date along with sage and rosemary notes touched with violets. Bright acids and fine tannins are well integrated in the mouth allowing this to show a nice softness with lovely balsamic notes appearing early on the palate followed by fine cut plum and tart wild strawberry jam flavors. This shows nice small yet angular tannins and has a long, slightly austere finish full of clear blue fruits. Medium bodied buy this drink some and cellar the rest for the next several years Already delicious I bet this will be even better in a year or two. 89pts

100% Touriga Nacional aged in French oak for 12 months and an additional 12 months in bottle before release. A dense dark purple color with a big nose of ripe black fruit, spice, cassis, and blackberry jam. Dry, medium bodied, med tannins with a slight rough texture, bright acidity, medium + alcohol (14%), and medium plus finish. The palate is full of jammy ripe dark fruit and not much else. This is a new world style red that should be a crowd pleaser for folks who like coca cola wines. If your looking for complexity and an old world hand in winemaking your barking up the wrong vine. In my opinion this wine was terribly one dimensional and boring unless you like tons of ripe fruit. There's a good reason why 90% of Touriga Nacional is blended with other varietals, though made well this wine is definitely lacking a soul. 1.5/5

From the outset, the Tolaini mission has been to embrace the region's rich tradition in culture and life by creating great wines that celebrate Tuscany. Vine planting techniques, irrigation systems, appropriate technology and initiation of special agricultural projects have all been undertaken after a careful, sensitive study of the terrain which included an initial rebalancing of the soil. Reflective of the vineyards that encircle, the winery at Tolaini Estate is an expression of both old and new. Gentle - yet not entirely traditional - winemaking techniques are used in a thoroughly modern facility to produce wine of great character. Different parcels of vines are harvested and fermented separately in order to achieve the highest quality wine possible. The winery contains a generous array of tank sizes, including temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters as well as open-top fermenters of French Allier oak. All primary fermentations undergo manual punch-downs to extract skins and pips without extracting unwanted bitterness. Batches are kept apart through subsequent barrel aging in new French oak before blending.

There's an interesting grilled meat note to the crushed red plum and berry flavors. Some leafy notes emerge on the finish, with mocha and spice. Tight. Drink now through 2013.

Continuing the succession of fine wines from Aveledaandrsquo;s Quinta da Agueira in Bairrada, this is a powerful, firmly tannic but ultimately smooth wine. It has big ripe swathes of dark plums, figs and refreshing sweet acidity.

Robust yet soft, with lush blackberries and plum notes. Soft earth and gentle spice add complexity on the long finish.
