Foley Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills Rancho Santa Rosa 2014

Winemaker's Notes:

Aromatics of juicy cherry cola, raspberry sorbet, and faint notes of black pepper awaken your senses. The aromas are accented by flavors of red cranberry, soft oak and vanilla bean with angular tannin and a bright acidity. Notes of toasted graham cracker, sweet cigar, and black tea come through on the finish. This 2014 embodies the classic, yet distinctive attributes for which Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is known. Food Pairing: Pair this wine with rare fillet steak and carpaccio. Alcohol 14.1%.

A historic parcel located in the Sta. (Santa) Rita Hills region of the Santa Ynez Valley, Rancho Santa Rosa was formerly a thoroughbred horse ranch. In 1998, the 460-acre property was purchased and planted to 230 acres of vineyard. Devoted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, the vineyard has been subdivided into 59 micro-blocks with each being farmed, harvested and vinified separately. The handsome stables have been refurbished to house the winery, with tremendous detail going into the planning of a modern facility, while honoring age-old winemaking tradition. Read less

Hugely ripe on the nose, simple, woody and jammy with obvious alcohol. Candied in the mouth with underlying dry tannins. This is undrinkable with too much of everything. Super fruity sweet, oaky and alcoholic but I know some folks like this style. 80pts

I found this bottle at Costco and thought it would be a good value. First, I love the Santa Rita Hills appellation. The weather changes here dramatically as you work your way from the coast to the eastern most part of the region, near Happy Canyon where they are making some fantastic Cabernet. West of the 101 you'll find the jewel of Pinotlandia on your way to Lompoc from the Buellton exit 246. That being said, this wine felt a bit over manipulated. Oak seemed to dominate the palate after the promising bouquet relinquished the spotlight. Hints of spice and subtle notes of sandalwood layered well, yet the fruit landed on deaf ears as it was lost in translation. A decent effort, yet far from what this region can offer in terms of vintages that represent works of staggering genius.

(Tasted 1/21/2011) Pretty garnet color, not terribly dark. Oaky aromas with some cinnamon(?). Medium bodied on the palate. Lightly fruited--I often seem to taste cherries in Pinot Noir, and while I get some cherry, it is not big. Very drinkable. Some tannic astringency and nice light acid. Some alcohol on the finish, but that is the first place that pops up. Peggy is making Boeuf Bourguignon, tonight. So, this wine was picked in keeping with the spirit. US$40.00 at the winery in 2009.

aging nicely, it's earthier now than I remember from 2 years ago. really smooth red fruit and sumptuous spice with a fairly long finish.

Named Wine Enthusiast Magazine's Person of the Year for 2010, William Foley II produces outstanding wines on his 460 acre estate in the Santa Rita Hills AVA in Santa Barbara County. In Matt Kramer's California Wine Book he says "Of all the Santa Rita Hills wineries, Foley has a shot at leading a very sophisticated and competitive pack." He call's the estate Vineyard, Rancho Santa Rosa where this wine comes from "The real jewel...", and it's easy to see why. This is rich, deeply flavored Pinot that's beautifully balanced. The estate has 31 different blocks of Pinot that are each harvested and fermented separately, then blended and aged in French oak for 12 months. Limited.
