Flora Springs Trilogy Napa Valley 2015

Winemaker's Notes:

"This was an unctuous wine that was packed with fruit – blackberry, cassis, black cherry, plum, chocolate, mocha, cedar and vanilla. It was nuanced and had depth. I kept discovering new flavors as we sipped. It was absolutely delicious." - DallasWineChick.com

Earthen and red fruited with soft clay and notes of strawberry, red currant and cherry. Dusty, smoky and brooding on the palate with notes of floral cherry blossom and ripe raspberry, a hefty mouthfeel and vanilla bean notes, finishing with smoke and leather and dried concentrated blackberries layered on top of strong tannins.

2015 TRILOGY WINEMAKER NOTES: genesis of Trilogy, one of Napa Valley’s first Bordeaux-style red blends, dates back to 1984 when our family decided to make the best wine possible by selecting the highest quality wine lots culled from our estate vineyards in Napa Valley. Trilogy continues to be sourced exclusively from the Komes-Garvey estate vineyards, and in 2015 this iconic wine brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot from St. Helena, Rutherford and Oakville. Bold, rich and highly extracted, this generous red is packed with boysenberry, black cherry, dark plum and black currant layered with milk chocolate, vanilla bean, cola and a hint of earthy cedar. Seasoned French and American oak adds just the right amount of toasty warmth, and the wine’s tannins, while rm, are round and smooth. This is a decadent wine, almost Port-like in its abundant fruit, with an umami-like unctuousness that leads to a long, satisfying finish. ON THE VINE: The 2015 vintage in Napa Valley will be remembered for high quality but low yields. The growing season began with warm temperatures in late winter and early spring resulting in an early bud break. In May, colder temperatures during bloom caused fruit set to be uneven, yielding a much smaller crop compared to earlier vintages. Winemakers and vineyard managers worked closely together as the season progressed to ensure grapes ripened uniformly. The harvest, which was in full swing by mid-August, was one of the earliest on record in Napa Valley, and most vintners completed picking by mid-October. Although the continuing drought was a concern around California, Napa Valley received 75% of its annual rainfall average in 2015 making it less worrisome for Napa vintners. Varietals: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Malbec 8% Petit Verdot Aging: 18 months, 85% French oak, 15% American oak

Winemaker Notes: The genesis of Trilogy dates back to 1984 when our family set out to make the best wine possible by selecting the highest quality wine lots culled from our estate vineyards in Napa Valley. By blending traditional Bordeaux varietals--Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc--we created one of the original Meritage wines. Over the years we’ve added other Bordeaux varietals to this Cabernet-based blend, always seeking to create the very finest wine from each individual vintage. Our 2013 Trilogy brings together Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot from our estate vineyards in Rutherford and Oakville in a wine that is richly fruited and generously structured. Dark and opulent with a saturated nose of blackberries, Bing cherries and sweet cassis, the wine slowly unfolds to reveal a core of black licorice, dark chocolate and mocha. This is a warm, voluptuous Napa Valley red with a long tannic structure that resolves in a lasting finish. On the Vine: Sourced exclusively from our family’s estate vineyards in the Rutherford (82%) and Oakville (18%) appellations, our 2013 Trilogy reects meticulous, sustainable farming practices along with the evolution of a wine style originated by the Komes and Garvey families and honed to perfection by winemaker Paul Steinauer. The stellar 2013 vintage in Napa Valley began with a warm spring that brought early bud break and created superb conditions for owering and fruit set. With the exception of one heat spike, summer temperatures were consistently in the zone for optimal vine activity, resulting in notably healthy vines as fruit went through veraison and ripening. Harvest was early, and continued dry weather extended these ideal ripening conditions until the last grapes were picked. Aging: 22 months, 73% French oak, 27% American oak Blend: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Petit Verdot 6% Malbec

Vintage: 2009 01/18/2013

A lovely wine, soft and charming, but far from simple. Although it has complex layers of cherries, blackberries, cassis and cedar, it also shows a fine structure of ripe, smooth tannins and supporting acidity. Drink now-2015 while it's fresh and forward. - S.H. The 2009 Trilogy is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 5% Malbec. The wine possesses good balance and depth in its dark red fruit, flowers, mint and spices. This attractive, tasty wine is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. Firm and complex, with a savory dried berry and forest floor edge that ends with a clipped, cedary oak taste. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Drink now through 2018. 7,500 cases made. -JL
