Flora Springs Napa Valley Merlot 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit herbal on the nose and slightly nutty with hint of peanut brittle and anise seed along with blueberry and black currant fruit. Broad and fairly voluptuous in the mouth, though with enough acid and soft tannins to lends this some definition on the palate. The flavors are deep and earthy with notes of macerated herbs and flower embedded in a core of slightly jammy black currant fruit. Slightly bitter tannins appear on the back end and cut the coffee toned, blue fruited finish a bit short. This smells great, and has an attractive mouthfeel so one hopes that the tannins will integrate over the coming year or two to complete the package, though the flavors on the palate are a bit murky. 88pts

Wine Enthusiast ReviewRated 91So forward and appealing right now, it's hard to resist, but this could gain a little traction with a two or three years of age. It's polished in cherry jam and blackberry-pie filling, with earthy tones of coffee, figs, sage and cedar. The intricate tannins play nicely against the acidity, which give it an upscale feeling.Wine Tasting NotesOur Napa Valley Merlot remains consistent over the years and this vintage is no exception. It boasts full fruit characteristics of strawberry and cherry, with a hint of raspberry and spiciness. A small amount of new oak barrels were used in the aging process, and we used a combination of French, American and Eastern European barrels to create a pronounced, but layered oak characteristic in the wine. The tannins are tea-like and smooth, making this wine one of our favorites for any occasion.
