What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Reviews

The nose is bold, hot, complex, and fruity. Beyond the initial fruit bomb you'll find black pepper, chocolate, and some toasted oak (oak done well!). This wine needs about an hour to open up and calm itself down. On the palate this wine really knows how to rock and roll -- good tannic structure, a robust mid-palate, and a heavy mouthfeel reminiscent of an imperial stout.

Very Very Nice Aussie Shiraz, Assertive nose, some pepper, spice, smoke, and fruit., licorice, even, very complex.

Taste - Big, pepper, leather, smoke, berry- upfront - blending to a nice spicy blackberry finish, incredibly long finish including some blueberry, pepper, and blackberry.

Comments - I like it, I really really, really, like it....Like most of the best Aussie Shiraz's this one is a big bomb of flavour and complexity, I especially like the way this wine finishes, it i snot too warming (even though it clocks in at 15% ABV) but lingers extremely long, read more...

The 2005 Shiraz was aged for 18 months in French and American oak hogsheads with 50% new French oak staves. Purple/black in color, the wine exhibits a big, brooding bouquet of pain grille, pepper, Asian spices, blueberry, blackberry, and licorice. Th... Robert Parker.
