What to Expect

California has long struggled with Pinot Noir. Finding the right vineyards for this most fickle of grape, one that enjoys a cool growing season yet needs warmth close to harvest to fully ripen, has proven a challenge in such a sunny state. Cooler areas eventually became identified; the Santa Rita Hills, Russian River Valley and Mendocino's Anderson valley are all prime spots for Pinot Noir in California. Unlike the lighter colored and sometimes delicate Pinots of Burgundy, California produces many rich, deep Pinots full of slightly chewy dark berry and cherry fruits with hints of cola, Asian spices and forest floor frequently adding complexity.

Reviews

The Fleur de California winery was begun in 1972 by a couple with a great love of Burgundy, and they have gone on to produce Pinot Noirs that remind us just why we love this grape. This bottle has cranberry and cherry aromas, warm earthy notes of nutmeg and forest floor, and a beautifully soft mouthfeel.

Very soft and fruity, barely any tannins, no earthiness - very easy drinking. A touch of bitter tannins on the finish, but pleasant. Nose is very light. Not bad. Served with a hearty chicken soup.

Light to medium body and color. Juicy grape and tangy flavors with a hint of chocolate. Surprisingly warm finish for a very refreshing start. However, the wine overall is drinkable and pleasant, but nothing extraordinary.

Fleur de California began as a winery in 1972 by a couple with a love of Burgundy. They have gone on to produce Pinots that remind us why we love Pinot: cranberry and cherry, along with warm earthy notes of nutmeg and forest floor. Plus a beautiful soft mouth feel.
