Food Pairings for Firefly Ridge Central Coast Merlot
While I was expecting to be disappointed by this generic store-brand wine (Safeway) and certainly would have been had I paid full price for it, I was pleasantly surprised by it. The red coloring of the wine is excellent and the blackberry notes really come through on the nose but are practically absent on the palate. A lot of sugar keeps it from fully achieving a real complexity. It's great as a red wine for those who normally don't take a liking to rich reds.
A pleasing red colour, thinning substantially at the edges. Plums and blackberry on the nose - and something else which is eluding me. The same fruit on the palate, but less so. My first impression on drinking is that there's a lot of sugar and a fair amount of acid, but not as well balanced as it could be. A little spice on the finish, fading into a crisp apple on a medium length palate. This was listed at $15.99 at the local supermarket, but was on sale for $5.99. As a under $10 bottle, it's solid at 3.5/5 (and great value at $6). At full price I would expect something a little more complex.
