Finca Villacreces Ribera del Duero Reserva 2005

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

Full ruby-red. Highly complex aromas of currant, espresso, celery, exotic coconut and earthy, dusty spices (coriander seed, cumin). Supple and flavorful, with notes of currant, meat, minerals, licorice and fresh herbs. This estatersquo;s wine often reminds me of Cheval Blanc in the early going, and this release is no exception. But here the 2001 vintage has brought a bit more flesh than usual. Persistent, lifted finish. Very interesting juice-and, as always, not your typical Ribera del Duero wine.

There is therefore an interesting fauna and flora. The property spreads over 115 hectares, 60 of which are vineyards. The guided tour lasts 1h15 and you will be taken through the vineyard to discover the nuances and subtleties of the different plots. The visit is concluded by wine-tasting. There are two possibilities: tasting the wines of their own cellar Finca Villacreces, or an « Artevino » tasting, which includes wines from Rioja, Toro and Finca Villacreces, combined with typical cheese from each region. There is a dining room for 25 people (previous booking necessary) which is ideal for company lunches or celebrations. There is also an annexed room which enables the use of audiovisual means. A blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot, the 2001 Reserva enjoyed malolactic in barrel and aging in French oak (much of it new) for 24 months prior to bottling. A complex nose of dried herbs, blueberries, black currants, licorice, and espresso is followed by a ripe, full-bodied, opulent, pure, elegant as well as nuanced wine. It should drink well for 7ndash;8 years.

A dark ruby Tempranillo with plum colored, syrupy legs on the sides of the glass. A traditional, old world red, with concentrated layers of black cherry, cardamon, leather, old wood, and tobacco. Very Bordeaux-like character with cedar, celery, and Worcestershire-type savory flavors. The long finish shows elegant, fine tannins, lush fruit, and a toasty spice. Great complexity.

Leathery and earthy, with some heavier, muddled characteristics that reflect the vintage. Overall, this wine is not on the same level as the superior 2004, but as it opens it shows a willing mouthfeel and finishing flavors of red currant and cranberry. If you own this along with the 2004, drink this one before the other.
