Finca Sandoval Red Blend Manchuela Cuvée Tns 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

The best vineyards have historically played a large role in the Spanish wine world: see, for instance, the centuries-old valuation of the top Jerez pagos. But, starting in the mid-19th century, the development of Spain's wines took a different tack when the so-called bodegas industriales appeared on the scene: big négociant-type firms with very large productions of name-brand wines made with grapes –often, bought-in– from different places. In 2000, a group of small producers of single-estate wines from Old and New Castile got together to defend the personality which defines the wines from the best growths and to promote this culture of individuality which was being reborn in Spain. They founded Grandes Pagos de Castilla (Great Growths of Castile). This not-for-profit association became Grandes Pagos de España in 2003, reponding to the requests of many colleagues in other parts of the country who wished to make the single-growth concept better known and to seek excellence through the direct relationship between wine and its place of origin. Gorgeous nose. Smells like a blockbuster wine. Flavors are initially nice and lively. Then, something goes missing on mid-palate - flavor seems to quit.

So yummy! Rich fruits and heavy body without the mouth pucker tannins usually found in a wine this rich. I would drink it daily if it were cheaper.

The 2005 Finca Sandoval is 76% Syrah, 13% Mourvedre, and 11% Bobal fermented with native yeasts followed by malolactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring, followed by aging from 11–13 months in French and American oak, a mix of new and seasoned 225 and 300-liter barrels. Purple-colored, the wine offers up an alluring nose of toasty oak, mineral, floral notes, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a full-bodied, ripe, layered wine with superb integration of oak, tannin, and acidity. There is enough structure to support 3–5 years of evolution in the cellar. This outstanding effort should be at its best between 2012 and 2025.

Inky purple. Sharply focused raspberry and blackberry scents are complemented by fresh flowers, licorice and graphite. Crisp and poised, offering intense, finely focused red and dark fruit flavors, and impressively silky texture and fully absorbed tannins. Fresh and energetic on the long, spicy finish. I suspect that this extremely impressive, syrah-based wine will put on weight and gain sweetness with a couple years of aging.

I suspect that this extremely impressive, syrah-based wine will put on weight and gain sweetness with a couple years of aging. Ripe, sweet-smelling and "muy moderno," but by no means is this Syrah-led warrior only fruit, bulk and oak. Spanish wine writer Victor de la Serna's wine gets better all the time. This vintage is like berry cake in a glass, but it's not short on anything, including acidity and tannic structure. Expect a blast of fruit flavor, intensity in reserve, and some forward oak, vanilla and butter. Should settle into form over the next 18 months. - M.S. ** Only 1 in Stock **
