Finca Luzon "Luzon" Jumilla 2008
"Bodegas Luzon is one of the leading producers and exporters of quality wines from D.O. Jumilla (Murcia, Spain). This winegrowing region is located in south-eastern Spain, in the north of the Murcia province, on a high plateau surrounded by mountains. It enjoys a continental climate influenced by the Mediterranean Sea with warm days and cool nights, over 3,000 sunshine hours annually and an average rainfall that does not exceed 300 l/m2 per year. Its soils are poor in organic material, coarse textured and stony, sandy clay and abundant in limestone. These soils produce small clusters, with good sugar concentration, excellent acidity and thicker skins. All of these characteristics result in the production of intensely coloured wines, which are very aromatic, fruity, tasty and fleshy on the palate. Color is intense cherry red with a red ruby rim. Aromas that are delicate, black fruit, balsamic, scrubland memories (rosemary, rockrose and liquorice). On the palate, Delicate and elegant structure, sweet tannins and balsamic species (nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon). Complex, touched by the delicacy and elegance from the Mediterranean climate." -Winery

Smoky and inky notes, along with licorice, frame flavors of cassis, mineral and game in this firm, juicy red, which is focused and expressive. Drink now through 2011.
The 2007 Luzon is 65% Monastrell and 35% Syrah. Purple-colored, it exhibits a bouquet of spice box, violets, and blueberry. On the palate this smooth-textured wine offers generous savory fruit, good balance, and a pure finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
Opaque purple. Intense, varietally accurate aromas of blackberry, tobacco, smoky minerals and violet, plus a bright peppery nuance. Silky in texture, with sweet dark fruit preserve flavors and no rough edges. I don't find any tannins here. Finishes with good breadth and lingering berry character. Very easy to drink, and a good choice for a smoky, grilled steak.
Opaque ruby. Blackberry, cracked pepper and anise on the nose, with a suave floral overtone. Vibrant dark berry flavors are nicely framed by silky tannins and given depth by a note of bitter chocolate. A note of violet lingers on the juicy, gently sweet finish. Hard to imagine getting more complexity for the money.
Attractive, full-force plum and berry aromas with a fruity, rich, concentrated palate of black fruit and plum. Smooth, nothing fancy, and always solid for those looking for a big, full-bodied wine at an affordable price. Luzon is the definition of a go-to producer.
Cherry, licorice and tobacco notes are fresh and focused in this balanced red. Light, firm tannins provide enough structure for food, and the finish is lively. Monastrell and Syrah. Drink now through 2014.
Truly captivating wine for under $10? Yes, Luzón's Monastrell-Syrah blend is exactly that. It delivers huge plum and spice notes, with tobacco, herbs and smoked meat working their way into the game. Remains powerfully fruity and spicy in the mouth, with a long, minty, medicinal finish. Competes with thousands of wines priced higher. Overdelivers by a lot!
