Finca Luzón Finca 2006
Tasting Notes: The outstanding LUZON 2006 is a blend of 65% Monastrell (Mourvèdre) and 35% Syrah. It is a full-throttle, exuberant, dense ruby/purple-colored effort with loads of crème de cassis, licorice, truffle, and acacia flower characteristics. This exotic, deep, broad, intense red should be drunk over the next 3-4 years, although it may last longer. Age of Barrel: None Alcohol Percentage: 14 % Aging Time: None Sugar Rate: 0-5 g/l
Over ripe and too much alcohol. Unbalanced.
Nose is very fruit forward, big dark berry aroma. Flavor is very big also: jammy and earthy; tannins and acidity are restrained. A wine that drinks well by itself and at $8 one of the best values for the buck.
Dark berry fruit, licorice, mushrooms, and leather on first whiff. Baked cherries and overripe dark fruit can overwhelm at first sip but opens up to spice and licorice notes through the finish. Not without imperfections, but a good value.
One of my cheap go-tos. Nice fruit flavors, not too much complexity but overall very enjoyable.
balanced and big bang for little bucks.

Coming from a tiny winery in the southeastern part of Spain, this full-throttled red is mostly Mourvèdre with a tiny bit of Syrah. Spicy black plum, red currants, and licorice fill the palate, and it finishes with a warm vanilla toastiness. A great introduction to Spanish reds.

Tremendous saturation of color, round rich flavors of ripe plums, blackberries and cassis. Balanced with notes of warm spices.
(50% monastrell and 25% each of cabernet sauvignon and tempranillo) Glass-staining ruby. Cherry-cola and blackberry on the nose, with sexy vanillin oak and baking spice accents. Pliant dark berry flavors stain the palate , with firming dusty tannins absorbed by the fruit on the broad, sweet, long finish. I find the oak here (all new, one-third of it American) to be complementary to the lush fruit but imagine that those with old-school palates will disagree. A leader in user-friendly Monastrell from Jumilla is Luzón. Altos is the winery's high-expression baby, and if you like a bruiser with char, toast, coffee and other nocturnal characteristics, then look no further. Dynamite in terms of ripeness, with monster black-fruit, chocolate and coffee flavors. Not for the weak. - M.S. The more serious 2006 Altos de Luzon is 50% Monastrell, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 25% Tempranillo and was aged for 12 months in new French and American oak. This purple-colored wine offers a complex aromatic array of pain grille, scorched earth, blueberry, black cherry, and violets. This leads to a full-bodied wine with layers of savory fruit, spicy flavors, outstanding depth and structure, and a lengthy finish. It will evolve for 2-3 years and be at its best from 2010 to 2018. This juicy red is packed with flavor, delivering sweet cherry, currant, chocolate and licorice flavors. A bit jammy, but well-integrated tannins provide structure.
