($50; from a single vineyard planted in 1945) Saturated ruby-red. Exotic nose of black cherry, cola, roasted herbs, licorice, damp earth and smoky, nutty oak; seems more evolved than the '99 Aurus. Fat, silky and superripe, with a creamy old-viney richness. Very sweet, lush and seamless, with liqueur-like ripeness. Rather Chateauneuf du Pape in character. Finishes very long and smooth, with big but fine tannins and a lingering note of chocolate. This would have merited an even higher score if it showed a bit more vibrancy and grip.
