Fife Scarlet Napa Valley 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

For centuries, the careful blending of Bordeaux varieties has produced some of the world's most majestic and finely structured wines. Scarlet follows in that classic tradition. A proprietary blend inspired by the classified wines of Bordeaux, Scarlet was born in the ancient, well drained, volcanic soils of the Napa Valley. Dennis Fife, proprietor of Fife Vineyards has been working with Bordeaux varieties at famous historic wineries in the Napa Valley since 1974. He has very definite opinions on which varieties should be grown in which terroirs Towards this end, in 1990 he began to plant Bordeaux varieties to realize his vision of a future Bordeaux blend. With the 2000 vintage, the ten year old vines produced the level of quality and complexity he was looking for. The result: our first Scarlet. In our Napa Valley vineyards that are planted with Bordeaux varieties, the 2000 vintage was excellent. These vineyards are in exceptionally well-drained soils with excellent sun exposure. Thus, varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon will consistently reach full maturity. These vineyards were also chosen for their cooling afternoon breezes which help avoid heat build-up and preserve acidity. Forward aromas of black currant, cedar, and mocha are echoed in the bright and lingering flavors, Even in its youth, the wine is surprisingly approachable, yet shows a refined intensity and a silky tannin structure that marks it as a Bordeaux blend capable of cellaring. We like to pour this wine into a decanter since aerating it magnifies the wine's softer, juicy side. Fife Vineyards:
Fife Vineyards is a small, family-operated winery producing wines that express their terroir and a European sensibility. They are food-friendly wines based on red Bordeaux, Rhône and Zinfandel varietals. We strive to avoid over-ripeness, excess oak and high alcohol, which we believe would mask the unique terroir driven flavors of our wines.
