Fields Family Wines Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Fairly intense aromas of loamy earth, plums, ink and violets greet the nose. This really does have an almost floral extract on the nose. Rich and moderately chewy in the mouth, there are some attractively ripe tannins here supporting flavors that are a bit plummy with hints of of chocolate and lots of Provençal herb accents making this almost Chateauneufy in the mouth. Lots of red berry fruit shows up on the modest finish. Really quite engaging. 88pts

Fields Family Wines is not just a winery, it’s also a collection. Not a collection of wineries, but a collection of family and friends, all working together to make the vineyard what it is today. After years of searching for the perfect land, the Fields family decided on a place along Woodbridge Road, in the heart of the Lodi appellation. With the help of Ryan Sherman, their winemaker, and the constant care of the Fields family, including Russ, Melinda, Van, Zack, and Mia, they collected their first harvest at the end of 2007. There are three main grapes grown at the Fields Family’s vineyards: Organic Syrah, Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, and Old Vine Zinfandel. The Syrah has been certified organic, and the highly demanded grapes are used in both the Field Family Wines label as well as in other wines throughout California. Read less

Raw beef, sage, bay and bay leaf all come together on the tight nose that shows an overlay of used wood. Opening with a burst of boysenberry this turns smooth polished and integrated in the mouth with a hint of milk chocolate accenting the clear if light fruit which is joined by a late arriving hint of green herb. Super fresh yet thoroughly ripe fruit on the modest finish completes the package. This is pretty suave and elegant Zinfandel and while it is textural beautiful, it is also just a bit on the simple side in the mouth, the aromatics are lovely so perhaps the palate will follow. 88pts
