Field Stone Sangiovese Alexander Valley Lucio's Block 2009

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is a bit tight on the nose with lots of licorice, light toast and cranberry character on the nose, with big, floral fennel seeds. Round and opulent in the mouth but is bright and clear as a bell. Love this texture. Tall and tense on the tongue, the acids and fine if angular tannins all fall in line to support fine Craisin/wild cherry fruit that is clear and fresh if ripely sweet. This is exuberant with a bit of wood tannin appearing on the finish, which shows some sour plum and cherry pit tones that are enlivened by the wine’s rather bright acid. This is really appealing, perhaps not the nose varietal Sangiovese, though who really knows, this might be the terroir speaking. Nonetheless this is delicious. 92pts

Field Stone Winery was founded in 1977 with its own celebrated estate vineyards dating back to 1894. It is owned and operated by John & Katrina Staten and their family. Praised by visitors for its hospitality and unique rustic beauty, the winery is a fascinating, small, underground facility carved into a picturesque oak knoll in the midst of its rolling vineyards in Sonoma County’s beautiful Alexander Valley. Known primarily for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and century-old vine Petite Sirah, Field Stone is also recognized for its select, handcrafted quantities of other award-winning, low-production wines: Sangiovese, Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay, Rosé of Sangiovese and Vintage Port. We have also introduced our new Convivio companion wine, made from our Merlot and Cabernet, from which we donate a portion of the proceeds to Clinica Alianza, a nonprofit medical center serving farmworkers and their families in Sonoma County. Field Stone’s winery and vineyard estate is located conveniently on Highway 128, the key artery linking northern Sonoma County and Napa Valley (the winery is just seven miles from Healdsburg and fourteen miles from Calistoga). Its cozy and inviting underground tasting room is open from 10 to 5 seven days a week. Its picnic ground, under its spreading oaks, has been called “one of the best spots for a picnic with a vineyard view in the Alexander Valley” Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Nice, ripe red berries on the nose with a bit of acidity balanced with taut juiciness. Unique and lovely.
