Field Stone Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Seductive, spicy varietal aromas, rich, complex fruit flavors (ripe cherries, plums and blackberries will come to mind) and a long finish enhanced by fine tannins and subtle oak vanillins.

Field Stone Winery was founded in 1977 with its own celebrated estate vineyards dating back to 1894. It is owned and operated by John & Katrina Staten and their family. Praised by visitors for its hospitality and unique rustic beauty, the winery is a fascinating, small, underground facility carved into a picturesque oak knoll in the midst of its rolling vineyards in Sonoma County’s beautiful Alexander Valley. Known primarily for its award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and century-old vine Petite Sirah, Field Stone is also recognized for its select, handcrafted quantities of other award-winning, low-production wines: Sangiovese, Syrah, Viognier, Chardonnay, Rosé of Sangiovese and Vintage Port. We have also introduced our new Convivio companion wine, made from our Merlot and Cabernet, from which we donate a portion of the proceeds to Clinica Alianza, a nonprofit medical center serving farmworkers and their families in Sonoma County. Field Stone’s winery and vineyard estate is located conveniently on Highway 128, the key artery linking northern Sonoma County and Napa Valley (the winery is just seven miles from Healdsburg and fourteen miles from Calistoga). Its cozy and inviting underground tasting room is open from 10 to 5 seven days a week. Its picnic ground, under its spreading oaks, has been called “one of the best spots for a picnic with a vineyard view in the Alexander Valley” Read less

This is always a good value and the 2005 is no exception. It's smooth and rich with a nose that features toasted oak as well as floral top notes and subtle suggestions of sage embedded in the red cherry fruit. On the palate this is already silky but the balance should allow this to improve in the bottle and, in fact, the wine gains excellent length and richness as it sits in the glass. The finish is nicely spicy with the oak toned gently layered under a bed of jammy red cherry with a nice mineral tone on the finale. 91pts

My rating 90 l Wine has a full fruity body with nice tannins and complexity. Nose is elegant with french type impressions of overripe grapes but still very elegant.Did not loose it's appeal over the years. Taste 10/2013
