Fiddlehead Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Oldsville Reserve 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Herbal on the nose with a bed of licorice and leather tones and sweet medicinal cough drop notes. Sweet and rich in the mouth with lots of cola, raspberry candy, herbal and minty medicinal tones. This is well proportioned and while imposing never gets clumsy or opaque. Finishes with a candied melon note. Complex and full bodied for the fruit lover who wants a bit more. Drink 2009-2015 92pts

Kathy Joseph established Fiddlehead Cellars to capture the pure essence of the two grape varietals that she loves best – Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Now in her twentieth vintage as “Head Fiddle”, Kathy continues to passionately pursue her goal of creating stylistic Sauvignon Blancs and silky, intense Pinot Noirs. Terroir-driven, Fiddlehead’s Sauvignon Blanc wines hail from the stellar eastern-end of the Santa Ynez Valley, while her estate Pinot Noirs showcase the cooler Santa Rita Hills in the western-most part of that transverse valley. And loving the nuances of place, Kathy continues to craft intriguing Pinot Noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Fiddlehead produces approximately 5,000 cases of wine each year, with all of the hands-on care and attention, and personal interest in each barrel of wine that fine wine requires. The wines are made at “FiddleHeadquarters”, our winery in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto. The Fiddlehead business office is in Davis, California – Kathy’s home away from Fiddlestix! We hope that our website gives you an idea of the passion that the entire Fiddlehead team has for our quest to make superb Sauvignon Blanc and perfect Pinot Noir. Experience Fiddlehead! Read less

Very dark color (particularly for a Pinot), sharp gradation from clear light garnet to deep ruby. Raspberry and hebs on the nose (with a hint of rubbing alcohol). Gentle berries and bright acidity up front with an oaky taste midway through and a nice finish.

Slightly hot nose, aromas of cola, bright fresh ripe cherries, and a bit of powdered sugar and oak. It's a refreshing wine, kind of a fruitbomb, bright and smooth with cherry cola flavors. Very drinkable.

The candied, cola nose was very apparent immediately, with wild flower notes on the back end. Acidity and fruit in very good balance. This is not a wine for those looking for a light bodied wine. This is a big pinot for big pinot lovers. Fruit is full and upfront, jammy on the finish. Ripe cherries and rasberries, and a hint of herb. Yummy, yummy, yummy. Pairs very well with pork and dried fruit and fennel.
