Situated in the tiny village of Sorbo Serpico in Campania's Irpinia region, this highly acclaimed estate was established in 1986. Along with the expert guidance of consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most esteemed winemaking talents, Feudi di San Gregorio has emerged into the international limelight as a great success story in a region that, for many years, was locked in a virtual winemaking holding pattern. Feudi di San Gregorio has aggressively tapped into the enormous potential of Campania's unique terroir and ancient varietals by placing a thoroughly modern spin on indigenous grapes such as Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo and Aglianico. Feudi di San Gregorio sources its grapes from the finest vineyards set in the rolling hills of the Irpinia region, located in close proximity to Mount Vesuvius. The volcano's legendary eruptions have laden the sandstone and marl soil with mineral-rich deposits of volcanic ash, forming a unique composition that imparts highly distinctive aromas and flavors in the grapes. Recognizing that a keen understanding of climatic conditions is indispensable to the successful cultivation of vines, Feudi di San Gregorio has invested extensively in state-of-the-art winemaking technology. Each of the estate's vineyards is equipped with a solar-powered meteorological station that gathers data continuously. By closely monitoring the environment, the estate is actively practicing eco-compatible viticulture, thereby reducing the need for artificial methods to an absolute minimum. Further embracing the benefits of technology, construction was recently completed on a modernized cellaring facility. A $20-million investment, it has the capacity to house an impressive 5,000 barrels. Read less

I tried this wine in late summer of 2005 before going to a U2 concert in Copenhagen. I mean 98 RP was the right thing to do at such a moment. Anyway I was not disapointed since this dry tannic and very intense wine was remarkbly powerfull and coloured our white plastic cups (I know, I know, but who will carry the crystal!) on the inside with a layer of dark purple sediment. I allmost shed a tear when one of our companions told me that this would be perfect in another 10 years or so. He was right. Lucky for me I allready had made the beginners consumer fault, which is to only buy one bottle. Since my failure with the Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Coteaux 1998, I have allways kept to the concept of buying at least 2 bottles when trying something new out.

Took time open up. Dark fruit and molasses gave way to earthy, cinamon and dark cherry. Lots of structure, lots of tannin but balanced.

Brilliant violet color. Somewhat muted nose, developed mocha on the nose. Cherry, black fruit, chocolate. Big but not overwhelming tannins. Less of an experience than my previous taste 9 months ago, more approachable, though also not as rich.

Deep inky ruby. Wonderfully ripe red and black fruit aromas with overtones of dark coffee, licorice, milk chocolate and charcoal. Offers a rich, luscious mouth feel and superb resonating length. This may not be a paradigm of restraint, but who could argue with hedonism in its purist form?

The 2001 Serpico, impenetrable and inky, staggeringly rich in both aroma and flavor, offers ultra-ripe but perfectly fresh berry fruit, cloves, cinnamon, and chocolate, and mouth-coating, deep-pile tactile sensations which combine iron power and an enveloping, voluptuous texture, infinitely deep and long. I would be amazed if this wine did not last thirty years.

Wine Tasting NotesRuby red with cherry nuances. Intense bouquet of wild fruits underscored by vanilla and spice notes. Full-bodied and balanced, with supple tannins and dark fruit flavors.

The 2001 Serpico is another wine that appears to need more bottle age. Today it is in an in-between stage where the fruit is no longer primary but the tertiary notes aren t fully developed either. The 2001 is a powerful Serpico with impressive tannic clout that will require further cellaring to soften. With time, hints of wild cherries, herbs, chocolate and leather emerge but only with great reluctance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.
