Feudi di San Gregorio Aglianico Campania IGT Rubrato 2005
This exceptional wine is made from 100% Aglianico grapes, partly from century old vines grown within the Taurasi DOCG area on rich humus and sandy soils with deep mineral and clay beds. Serpico has an intense ruby red colour and a complex, lingering bouquet of cherry preserve, sweet spices, liquorice, coffee and cocoa. The palate shows considerable concentration of ripe fruits, spices, nuts and chocolate with a well integrated, fine grained tannic structure and a dash of minerality. It finishes complex, satisfying and lengthy. Best suited to food matching and ideal with rare red meats such as beef, lamb, boar or duck. Perfect with rich sauces (mushroom or fruit based) and delicious with full flavoured hard cheese such as Pecorino.
Showed power but balanced with old world grace and elegance. Delicious, one of the top wines from Campania each year. Disappointed in the 2003 Serpico which I tasted after the '05, the wine showed hot and volatile.

Feudi di San Gregorio, a modern expression of a centuries-old tradition of passion and dedication to the land, is Campania’s premier winemaking estate. This highly-acclaimed winery was established in 1986 and since then, it has aggressively tapped into the enormous potential of Campania's unique terroir and ancient varieties by placing a contemporary spin on indigenous grapes such as Aglianico. The proprietors have pinpointed the region’s finest vineyards and work closely with consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most esteemed winemaking talents to produce wines like this lush, full-bodied Aglianico. Grapes are hand-harvested during the last two weeks of October. After de-stemming and pressing, maceration lasts 20 days. The wine is aged for 8 months in French barriques prior to bottling and release.
