Tasting all too much like the cheap wine that it is, this shallow effort flirts momentarily with a brief note of ripe berries, but it runs straightaway to coarseness and, even if not high in alcohol, it heats up on the finish for want of buffering fruit.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Sprightly and clean, with full-throttle fruit and spice and a softly tannic texture. The pepper and wild-berry flavors are distinctive and delicious, and nicely dry. Try with pizza, or pasta with spicy sausages.

Plan a neighborhood fundraiser. Serve pizza, nachos, that sort of thing. Then buy a few cases of this Zin. With its dry tannins and acidity, it will go down easy with Parmesan and olive oil.

Most wineries selling inexpensive Zin are putting out mediocre stuff, but Fetzer overdelivers for the price. You'll find this wine to be dry, richly tannic and balanced, with satisfying flavors of spicy blackberries, cherries and tobacco.

On the palate, the wine is dense and rich, with intense flavors of tobacco, dried berry, and prune. The finish is long and medium-bodied, with soft tannins.
