Winemakers Notes

The February 2006 issue of Wine Enthusiast has a "90, Cellar Selection" for the 2002 Fetzer Vineyards Coro Mendocino. The San Francisco Chronicle wine competition judges awarded this wine a GOLD medal. This second vintage of Coro is perhaps fresher and brighter than the inaugural release, with the tannins well under control. On the nose there are hints of Allspice, ripe berries and a floral quality reminiscent of violets. The blend assigns each varietal a role. The Zinfandel provides distinctive aromas, the Petite Sirah and Syrah offer texture and rich flavors, while the Grenache read more...Noir sprinkles a wonderful array of aromatics. In the mouth there is a distinct licorice and anise character, with blackberries and juicy, jammy ripe fruit evident. Zinfandel Brown - East side of Redwood Valley, 35- 40 year old head trained vines on red soil benchlands. Cononiah - From the Talmadge bench on the East side of the Ukiah Valley, 35-45 year old head trained vines from two rocky knobs, adding intense aromatics. Piffero - Rocky soils on the eastside of Redwood Valley featuring one block with 60-year old head trained vines and another young block planted with wood and clones from the "mother" block. Whispering Oaks - This tiny vineyard, just over two acres, was planted six decades ago southwest of Ukiah. Fruit from WO has a mint character that adds complexity in the Coro blend. Syrah Eaglepoint -High above the ridge tops at 2000 feet, Syrah blocks in this mountain vineyard were planted in 1989 in thin, rocky soils. McDowell - Coro fruit comes from one of the oldest blocks of Syrah in California, planted originally in 1896, and replanted twice since, in 1919 and 1949. Vines from the original 19th century planting still offer fruit of intense flavor. Petite Sirah Eaglepoint - Petite Sirah was originally planted in the 1880's here, and Fetzer produced a reserve bottling for many years in the 1970's and 1980's. McDowell - Our Petite Sirah block features vines averaging 50 years, a rock throw away from ancient blocks planted decades ago in another century. Yields are small, with concentrated flavors and deep color. Grenache Noir McDowell - New in the United States (the clone appeared about seven years ago) and recently planted, the fruit adds wonderful rose petal aromatics and rich color to our Coro.

The vintage was big, bold and beautiful, notable mostly for its wonderfully boring lack of complications. Mild summer weather patterns were the norm, following a dry spring. We saw fog, but no rain, from June through harvest, when September and October continued to offer warm weather, allowing the fruit to develop intense flavors, deep color and complexity.    (hide)
