I really enjoyed the 2006 release of Fess Parker's Ashely's Vineyard Pinot Noir. It's a bit young (gave it 4 glasses for now and expect it to go higher the next time I taste it), but I think the balance of smooth tannins, acidity, alcohol and fruit will give it some staying power and in the bottle I tried I detected a hit of that Old World "earthiness" I find in Burgundian wines. Accessible now, will only get better over the next couple of years.

Dark red. Sexy, floral-dominated bouquet of cherry, sassafras, rose, magnolia and Asian spices. Tangy, sharply focused red berry flavors gain depth and sweetness with air, picking up tangy mineral and floral pastille qualities. A strikingly lively and balanced wine that finishes with excellent mineral lift and thrust.

Bright red. Exotically perfumed scents of red and dark berry preserves, with potpourri and spice notes adding complexity. Juicy and alluring sweet black raspberry and candied rose flavors are energetic and unencumbered by tannins. The brisk finish shows a resonating dark berry quality.

The most intriguing wine in this quartet is the 2004 Pinot Noir Ashleyrsquo;s Vineyard. This beautifully layered Pinot boasts notes of smoked game, black currants, cherries, underbrush, and forest floor. Layered, dense, rich, and full-bodied with a silky finish, it should evolve for another 7ndash;8 years.

Aromas of black cherry, raspberry compote, rose petal, cinnamon and graham cracker set the stage for this elegant wine. Black cherry, cranberry an earthy/forest floor element and a touch of minerality are highlighted by the hallmark acidity found in fruit from this cold climate vineyard. A touch of sweet oak frames it all in nicely and makes for terrific aging potential.

The 2007 Pinot Noir Ashleyandrsquo;s Vineyard may turn out to be the longest lived of these Pinots. Its deep ruby/garnet color is accompanied by an evolved nose of spicy black cherries and forest floor. Layered and rich with sweet tannin, impressive concentration, and medium to full-bodied, it will age gracefully for at least 6andndash;8 years. While Fess Parkerandrsquo;s single vineyard and upper level cuvandeacute;es are unquestionably serious wines, he also produces some of the finest values that emerge from Santa Barbara.

Pretty acidic and tannic, with the hard mouthfeel containing flavors of red cherries, bitter cherryskin, currants and cloves. With a dry, astringent finish, the wine may need a few years to come around.
