Ferraton Pere & Fils Crozes-Hermitage la Matinière 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Son of a wine producer and a wine producer himself, Jean Ferraton founded his own vineyard in 1946 in the Hermitage and Crozes-Hermitage appellations together with his father-inlaw, Jean Reverdy. He passed on his passion to his son, Michel who developed the estate by extending the vineyards and adding the current premises in Tain L’Hermitage. In 1994 his own son, Samuel Ferraton took over and has continued the family’s art of wine-making, preserving the knowledge and learning that have been handed down to him. As a result all of the estate’s vines were converted to biodynamic viticulture and the wines became organically certificated. This was combined with the continuation of hand-picking and traditional vinification techniques. The philosophy and style of the wines continue to be dictated by Samuel Ferraton. Crozes Hermitage La Matinière is produced from the areas of Mercurol and Beaumont-Monteux with terraces of glacial alluvial deposits (pebbles, small stones and gravel). These grapes are destemmed, given 20 days of maceration, and 30% aged in oak for 12 months. Subsequently this wine is intense cherry-red in colour, with aromas of forest fruits and blackcurrant. It has soft tannins, medium body and a good, well-knit finish. This wine is the perfect partner for lamb so try it with Tuscan lamb, Moroccan Tagine or Lamb shank, for optimum enjoyment.

Ferraton Père & Fils:
Ferraton Père et Fils is a winery/negociant in the north of the Côtes du Rhône. Their wines are smooth, well balanced and very affordable considering the quality. Notably their Crozes-Hermitage "La Matinière" red and white and the St-Joseph "La Source", also red and white. For wines to lay down, look more towards the Hermitages and the single vinyard selection.
