Food Pairings for Ferrari-Carano Vineyards & Winery Merlot
Cherry, melon, prune, dark fruit, sweet caramel, cream cheese, cotton candy, coffee, licorice and pepper on the nose. After 1 ½ hours, nose turns vegetable and closes off. Initial heat attacks the top back palate, followed by sour fruit (apple), black cherry and bell pepper in the middle. This wine starts tight, then opens briefly, then closes again. The cycle repeats itself. Smooth texture soon fades back to plainness, then comes back again to velvet at 2 hours. May need another year in the cellar to achieve balance and expose its qualities more evenly.
Chose this as my dinner wine two weeks ago when dining with an old friend who was traveling through the area. Having not seen him in over twenty years, I had to endure 2 hours of his graphic and excruciatingly detailed account of a 1998 boating accident in which he lost his left arm. The gruesome yarn put a pall over my experience with this wine. My recollection is that it had a medium body with a lengthy finish, unfortunately neither as lengthy as my friend's tale of woe nor the appendage that now hangs from his left shoulder.
over-bearing, buttery, milky, deep color
Shared a bottle with 4 friends at a restaurant; we all had different Italian meals (seafood, tomato-based pasta, cream-based, beef, saffron, etc) and this wine complemented the meals perfectly. Versatile, balanced. I'd buy it again.
